Florian Wirtz couldn’t hide his frustration as he prepares to head back to Liverpool off the back of a disappointing final game with Germany.

The 23-year-old started once again and was handed the captain’s armband by Jurgen Klopp as the four-time world champions faced Greece on Sunday, but he couldn’t inspire them to another victory in Thessaloniki as they were held to a goalless draw.

It means former Liverpool boss Klopp has won just one of his four games in charge of his country so far, with his side failing to score for the second time during the international break against the same opponent.

The visitors weren’t without their chances though, having registered 21 shots to Greece’s five while ending the game with 70 percent possession, making Wirtz’s frustration understandable.

“We put a lot of pressure on, but didn’t score the damn goal. That’s annoying,” he told RTL.

“Overall, we can be satisfied with how we played – there were a lot of good things. We mustn’t forget that we’ve only been together for a week.

“We really wanted the win, we didn’t – but of course, not everything was bad.”

Although it proved to be another aggravating night for Germany, Wirtz’s performance was praised by a number of German outlets, which will offer more encouragement ahead of his return to Liverpool this week.

Wirtz’s place in Andoni Iraola’s side has come under major scrutiny after a poor start to the season, coming off the back of a disappointing first year at Anfield. His two most recent performances for his country, including a match-winning display against Serbia, may allay some fears ahead of the visit of Manchester City on Sunday.

For Klopp though, the legendary Liverpool boss will have plenty to ponder after his first four games in charge.

It has been a mixed start, with just one win, two draws and a defeat, while his side has mustered just three goals, with two of those coming in the same game against Serbia.

His decision to select 44 players during the break has raised some eyebrows in Germany, although Klopp is standing by the call, and feels it has been a success.

"We have seen a lot of national team players in these two weeks," Klopp declared. "Everyone proved themselves, everyone earned their right to be here."

"What people have said about us. What we can do. What we can't do. We showed a few signs that we can do a few things better than people gave us credit for."

"I wanted to get something moving, I definitely saw that.”
