The Washington Commanders' trip to London did not go as planned. The club not only suffered a 30-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, but backup quarterback Marcus Mariota also sustained a right knee injury during the contest. On Monday, the franchise received even more bad news to pile on to the struggles of Week 4.
Reports indicate that wide receiver and return man Jaylin Lane was diagnosed with a season-ending lower-body injury, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Lane is dealing with a fracture and dislocation in his left leg. He is currently in London and will return to Washington once cleared to travel.
“Commanders punt returner and WR Jaylin Lane suffered a fracture and dislocation of his ankle, tests confirmed, and he is likely done for the season. Lane's ankle has now been stabilized, and the speedster is undergoing further tests from the injury in London.”
The 24-year-old is a former fourth-round pick by the Commanders in the 2025 NFL Draft. He's appeared in 19 games in his career so far (four starts), serving as a rotational option in the wide receiver room. His main role with the club, however, is returning kicks and punts.
Lane ends his season with 19 total return attempts (12 kick returns, 7 punt returns), which have led to 379 total return yards. He is an electric return man, as he led the NFL in punt returns for touchdowns with two in his rookie year. The Commanders will likely look at the practice squad or free agency to find a replacement for Lane on the roster.
