Liverpool have been handed a potential injury concern ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Manchester City after Jeremy Jacquet was left out of France’s squad to face Belgium.
According to Fabrice Hawkins, the Liverpool centre-back felt a strain in his left hamstring and has therefore been rested for the Nations League fixture.
The decision will concern Liverpool as the Reds prepare for a crucial clash against City at the weekend. Jacquet has quickly become a key part of their defence.
Liverpool spent £60 million to sign the 21-year-old from Rennes, initially allowing him to remain in France on loan before bringing him to Anfield.
Jacquet arrived injured but has since enjoyed an impressive start at Liverpool, forming an effective partnership with Virgil van Dijk.
His performances have also earned him a first call-up for France under new manager Zinedine Zidane.
Jacquet impressed on his international debut against Belgium and followed that up with another assured display in France’s 1-1 draw with Italy.
He can become a regular for France. However, Liverpool will be hoping the hamstring problem is nothing serious.
They sit in sixth place after an inconsistent start to their Premier League campaign and will hope to take down the table toppers when they come to Anfield on Sunday.
With Dayot Upamecano suspended after being sent off against Italy, Jacquet was expected to feature again for France against Belgium before being withdrawn.
For Liverpool, his absence would be a significant blow if the injury keeps him out against City. It may force Ronald Araujo back to the centre-half role.
Jeremie Frimpong or Joe Gomez could start at right-back in place of the Uruguayan.
The Reds have found a long-term defensive leader in Jacquet, who could eventually succeed Van Dijk as the cornerstone of their backline.
For now, though, Liverpool will sweat over his fitness.
