Liverpool has been handed a new injury scare, with Jeremy Jacquet having been left out of France's squad to take on Belgium on Monday.

The 21-year-old had been expected to make his third successive start for his country after impressing on his debut against the same opponent last week, and earning rave reviews for his display against Italy.

Jacquet though misses out on a place in Zinedine Zidane's final squad of the international break, with Manchester United's Leny Yoro making his senior debut in his place. Bradley Barcola does start though as Liverpool's summer signing continues to search for his first goal of the season.

According to RMC Sport's Fabrice Hawkins, Jacquet felt a strain in his hamstring leading up to Monday's game, leading to him being left out of the squad completely.

The news will come as a major concern for Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola, who is already sweating on the fitness of two of his players after they returned early from international duty.

Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo were released by Sweden and the Netherlands respectively after picking up injuries. Isak's issue has been described as minor, raising hopes that he will be able to recover in time to face Manchester City on Sunday, but Gakpo's problem is more of a concern, having been forced off against Serbia with an ankle injury.

Jacquet's injury is the first setback of what has been a superb start for the season for the young defender. Having spent much of the summer recovering from the shoulder injury which prematurely ended his time at Rennes, he has impressed with his performances alongside Virgil van Dijk in Liverpool's defense, leading to his first call-up for France's senior team.

Speaking to Telefoot about his first two games for his country, Jacquet said: “I used to watch the matches on TV; now I’m part of them.

“It’s going well, though there’s room for improvement. I’m happy with these first two caps. I’ve always been a calm player on the ball—I just play my game.

"Years of hardship—I haven't had an easy life. So, right now, I’m happy. I’ve had back and knee issues, but I try to look straight ahead. I’m playing for my nation, my country, and under the guidance of Zinedine Zidane."

Liverpool.com says: Fingers crossed that is just a precaution from France, but it's not too promising a sign when Jacquet has been left out of the squad altogether for that final game.

That could put Liverpool in a very tricky situation, with Ronald Araujo having put in plenty of miles with Uruguay. Hopefully both can still take their place in Sunday's side against City.
