With a sudden shortage at cornerback, the Steelers are signing veteran Sean Murphy-Bunting off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad and placing him on their 53-man roster, sources have confirmed to the Post-Gazette.

The 29-year-old has started 65 of 82 games in six NFL seasons — four with the Buccaneers. He was a starter for Tampa Bay in Super Bowl LV and had three interceptions during the Buccaneers’ playoff run. He has 11 career interceptions.

With last week’s trade of Joey Porter Jr. to Dallas and an ankle injury suffered by Jamel Dean in Cleveland on Thursday night, the Steelers could be shorthanded at cornerback heading into Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Murphy-Bunting played one season with the Tennessee Titans in 2023 before signing a three-year, $25.5 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals. He lasted two seasons in Arizona but suited up only in 2024. He missed all of last season with a torn ACL.

After the Cardinals cut him in late August, Murphy-Bunting signed to the Buccaneers’ practice squad on Sept. 2.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero first reported that the Steelers were signing Murphy-Bunting.
