The Seattle Seahawks are in crisis mode at the running back position after rookie first-round pick Jadarian Price was placed on the injured reserve with a chest injury.

Seattle worked out two-time Pro Bowler Joe Mixon on Monday as the team explores options at the position. Mixon topped 1,000 yards on the ground with the Houston Texans in 2024 before missing the entire 2025 campaign with a mysterious foot injury, described as "freak" by Texans general manager Nick Caserio.

Mixon, 29, was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2017 and spent the first seven seasons of his career in the Queen City. He signed a three-year, $27 million deal with Houston in 2024.

The former Oklahoma running back missed all of the team's 2025 offseason workouts as he attempted to recover from an undisclosed foot injury suffered early in the spring.

“He didn’t do anything off the field, it wasn’t like he was riding like a snowmobile or anything like that,” Caserio said in January 2026. Houston never shared the cause of his ailment.

“I’d say it was more of a medical condition or situation that we never — it really didn’t improve as much as everybody would hope.....“It was a freak thing, honestly, I’ve never seen it, the condition."

Mixon was placed on the non-football injury and illness list. He was perpetually rumored to return but never did, and Houston instead turned to the underwhelming duo of Woody Marks and Nick Chubb in his stead.

Things got so bad that reports stated Mixon had told his former teammates that his NFL career was over, though it seems he never actually filed retirement papers.

Price started the season slowly, even before his injury. He was drafted to help replicate the explosiveness of reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker, who was lost in free agency to the Kansas City Chiefs.

"By no means is this JD's fault or anything like that," Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said of the injury. "This is just what happens in football. Unfortunately, injuries happen. He can't control these things."

Without him, Seattle turned to the duo of Emmanuel Wilson and George Holani in a 30-23 home win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

The Seahawks are expecting the return of Zach Charbonnet, a key red-zone touchdown threat, in a few weeks. The former Seattle third-round pick returned to practice this week as he slowly recovers from a January ACL tear.

The 3-1 Seahawks take on the 4-0 San Francisco 49ers at home next Sunday in a key NFC West showdown.
