Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have joined Alex Scott’s growing list of fans as the Liverpool target comes in for more praise following his first start for England.

The midfielder has managed to break into the Three Lions’ squad after a superb 2026, with the 23-year-old having joined Thomas Tuchel’s side for a training camp ahead of the World Cup before making his international debut last week.

He continued his rise with a first start for his country in the 7-0 demolition of Croatia on Saturday, and managed to catch the eye once again, despite not scoring, which will have piqued the Reds’ interest.

According to BBC Sport, Liverpool is one of the clubs circling for Scott, along with Chelsea and Arsenal. The midfielder, of course, played under Andoni Iraola during the Spaniard’s time in charge at Bournemouth, but the Reds were linked with him even before he made the move to the Cherries from Bristol City in 2023.

Liverpool’s head coach will have been encouraged by what he saw from Scott on Saturday, with his performance leading Lineker and Shearer to sing his praises on The Rest Is Football podcast.

"What an assured performance! Lineker started. “I watched him quite closely because we can argue it's one game. It's against a team that didn't play very well on the night, and England were really good.

"But he was very much part of that game. And the one thing, you can look at perhaps the great teams that win competitions, they have control in a game, and I think that is a player that I don't think we've necessarily seen within that England midfield.

"He's always scanning. I noticed a lot of that, and in the right way. So I was really impressed. And I mean, what a very, very confident start."

Shearer added, "I think it's very early. He was brilliant, albeit against an aging Croatian side. But when you take all that into account, he was superb, and it gives the manager another option. I think that's a good thing, and I don't think he's had too many in those positions."

Lineker and Shearer’s comments come after Scott was singled out for praise by Tuchel, with the England boss clearly a huge fan of the midfielder.

“First start and what a start. What a performance,” Tuchel said in his post-match press conference.

“He’s just so smooth at the moment on the ball, decision-making is on the highest level, he plays with so much confidence. He’s so active, so confident, and the work-rate off the ball, he’s the complete package at the moment.

“He gave us today a lot of mobility, a lot of variety, and a lot of work-rate in the center of the pitch, together with Elliot [Anderson].”

Scott’s chances of making a move in the January transfer window have been dealt a major blow, though, having been forced to withdraw from England’s squad ahead of the game against Czechia on Tuesday, with reports suggesting a quad injury could keep him out for up to eight weeks.
