Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa is “ready to return” to Italy in January, according to reports.

Calciomercato.it claim that the 28-year-old wants to play regularly in order to give himself the best possible chance of being recalled by his national team.

It is believed that three Serie A teams are monitoring his situation: champions Inter Milan, Atalanta and Lazio.

At this stage, no formal offer has been lodged for the winger, but they could make an approach when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.

Why hasn’t Chiesa played so far this season?

The Italian international had yet another injury setback on the eve of the Premier League campaign, picking up a back problem in the last pre-season friendly against Como.

It means that Chiesa hasn’t featured in a competitive match so far under head coach Andoni Iraola.

The forward is expected to make his comeback after the international break, and any final decision on his future will probably hinge on how often he features between now and January.

Chiesa’s injuries since joining Liverpool

The Euro 2020 winner has struggled to stay fit since he was snapped up from Juventus for £12.5m at the start of the 2024/25 season.

Many supporters felt it was a smart piece of business at the time, but Chiesa has simply not been able to get on the pitch often enough.

Fitness issues meant that he didn’t even make his debut until mid-September 2024. He then picked up five separate injuries over the next two years (including the back issue which has kept him on the sidelines since August).

All in all, Chiesa has spent 138 days on the treatment table, having made 50 appearances and only 2 league starts.
