Liverpool Eye Dynamic Midfield Reinforcements
Liverpool transfer news has taken an interesting turn, with Andoni Iraola reportedly considering two experienced midfielders ahead of the January transfer window. Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni and Atletico Madrid’s Marcos Llorente have emerged as potential targets as Liverpool assess their midfield options.
According to reports from Football Transfers, Liverpool have started monitoring both players, although their profiles offer different qualities. Chelsea and Manchester City are reportedly tracking Llorente as well, creating further competition for his signature.
Atletico could demand around €35m for the Spanish international, who approaches the final months of his contract. However, the Spanish club remain interested in extending his stay, which could complicate negotiations.
Tchouameni presents a different financial challenge. Real Madrid paid around €80m to secure his services from Monaco in 2022, and that investment could influence their position during negotiations. His estimated market value stands around €51m, although Madrid have little reason to sanction an inexpensive January departure.
Liverpool need midfielders who can press aggressively, recover possession and cover significant distances. Iraola built his Bournemouth reputation around intense pressing, quick transitions and winning second balls. Therefore, his recruitment plans could prioritise players who understand those demands.
Llorente has already demonstrated his ability against Liverpool. He scored five goals against the Reds, including four at Anfield, across previous meetings. His energy, attacking runs and ability to operate at right-back or in central midfield give Iraola several tactical possibilities.
Interestingly, Manchester City‘s failed pursuit of Cody Gakpo during the summer provides another example of how quickly Premier League transfer negotiations can change. City reportedly offered £80m, while Gakpo agreed to personal terms on a proposed five-year contract. However, Liverpool rejected the approach and retained the Dutch forward.
Why Marcos Llorente could appeal to Iraola
Llorente offers something Liverpool currently needs, and that’s flexibility without sacrificing intensity. He can press from midfield, attack the penalty area and cover defensive positions when teammates move forward.
His age, however, deserves consideration. At 31, he represents a shorter-term investment than Tchouameni, while his contract situation could encourage Atletico to demand a substantial fee.
Tchouameni, meanwhile, offers greater defensive discipline, physical strength and experience in controlling central areas. His ability to protect the defence could prove valuable against opponents who attack through midfield.
Who should Liverpool prioritise in January if they can sign the midfielders?
I’d choose Llorente, provided Liverpool negotiate a sensible fee and secure clarity over his contract situation.
Iraola needs midfielders who can sustain his pressing demands, and Llorente brings that intensity alongside goals and positional flexibility. Tchouameni remains the more natural defensive midfielder something Liverpool have not really had since Fabinho left.
A move for him would be serious and could potentially be a key part of the spine of the team, but his potential transfer cost makes the deal considerably harder.
For a January move, Llorente offers Liverpool a more immediate tactical option. However, if Iraola wants a long-term defensive anchor, Tchouameni deserves serious consideration.
