Jets fans will be mindblown after crazy stat against Bears shows why they lost image
It's almost impressive how the New York Jets lose sometimes, and that's not exactly meant as a compliment. For a Jets team that hasn't done a lot of winning over the past decade or so, there have been times when things just look extremely ugly.
Whenever the Jets lose, it never feels like this team can just lose in a normal way.
That was the case in Week 4 against the Chicago Bears, as the Jets ended up losing 23-12 and weren't able to get anything going on the offensive side of the football. New York finished with just 157 total yards, allowing 492 yards against backup quarterback Tyson Bagent.
One concerning stat from this game is almost breathtaking.
The Jets only ran 32 offensive plays compared to the Bears' 89, and it was so bad that it made Jets franchise history.
“The worst of the issues: The Bears had the ball on offense for 42 minutes and 45 seconds. The Jets had it for only 17 minutes and 15 seconds.
“The Jets ran only 32 offensive plays to the Bears’ 89. That marks the second-worst ratio between opponents in a single game in NFL history, behind only the expansion Browns in 1999, according to Stathead. Those 32 offensive plays were the fewest in a Jets game in franchise history — and it gets worse. The Bears had more first downs on offense (34) than the Jets had total plays. And the Jets mustered only seven first downs,” Zack Rosenblatt wrote.
It's almost unheard of to run 32 plays in an offensive game and get 34 first downs, compared to the Jets' seven.
It doesn't help that the Jets were 0-for-7 on third downs and had 12 penalties for 76 yards. The time-of-possession situation was also a problem, something the Jets will have to figure out.
