Today to mark Niall Quinn’s 60th birthday, we’re resurfacing Episode One of City Stories as we remember a truly iconic moment featuring the Irish talisman.

City Stories is a series of mini-documentaries charting some of the most memorable moments in the history of Manchester City – and this was certainly one of them!

For Episode One, we go back to 1991 when a red card for goalkeeper Tony Coton meant striker Niall Quinn was forced to take his place between the sticks.

Up against Derby County who were on the brink of relegation, fan favourite Quinn had already scored an exquisite left-footed volley to give us the lead.

However, Derby’s Dean Saunders was soon through on goal before Coton was deemed to have brought him down.

With our No.1 given his marching orders and no substitute goalkeeper, Quinn took Coton’s shirt and gloves.

The Ireland international’s first duty was to face up to the resulting penalty. Incredibly, he saved the shot at full stretch to turn it behind for a corner.

It inspired us to a victory on the day and even went some way to earning Quinn the Player of the Year award for that season!

With input from the key players that day including Quinn, Coton and player-manager Peter Reid, this is the story of a game that lives on in the memories of all that were at Maine Road.

Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish and Matheus Nunes also look back at the footage, with Haaland imagining the impact the modern day equivalent would have on social media.
