NFL suspends officials

The NFL on Monday suspended a line judge two games for swearing at Arizona tight end Trey McBride. Jeff Seeman was caught on camera cursing at McBride during the Cardinals' loss at the New York Giants on Sunday. The interaction took place with just under five minutes left after officials did not call a pass interference or illegal contact penalty on New York's Dru Phillips, who made contact with McBride before the ball arrived from Jacoby Brissett on a third-and-2 play. Arizona punted and the Giants went on to win 36-24 after Deonte Banks intercepted Brissett's pass and ran it back for a touchdown as time expired. Referee Adrian Hill was also suspended one game for unprofessional conduct in the Miami-Minnesota game. Hill yelled at Eric Wilson and pointed for him to get away after the Vikings linebacker tried to help him to his feet after a collision knocked him over. The league's vice president of officiating, Ramon George, issued the suspensions. The NFL Referees Association did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

W. Virginia commit killed

West Virginia football commit Chris Wilson Jr., a 4-star defensive end prospect from Indiana, was shot and killed early Monday morning in Muncie, Ind. He was 17. According to police, emergency dispatchers received a report of gunfire at approximately 2:59 a.m. Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not identified a suspect or released a possible motive. Wilson was a senior at Yorktown High School and one of Indiana's highest-rated football recruits in the class of 2027. He committed to West Virginia in June, choosing the Mountaineers over offers from Auburn, Cincinnati, Purdue and several other Division I programs. The 235-pound edge rusher was ranked 31st at his position nationally and sixth overall in Indiana, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings. Wilson recorded 25 tackles, including four sacks, and an interception during his junior season in 2025, helping Yorktown capture a Class 4A sectional championship. He had 12 tackles and a sack through five games this season. Yorktown principal Stacey Brewer confirmed Wilson's death Monday in a message to students and families, saying his family had given the school permission to release the information.

Eagles' Bigsby to IR

Philadelphia Eagles running back Tank Bigsby needs core muscle surgery and will be placed on injured reserve, ESPN reported Monday. Bigsby suffered a core injury Sunday late in the Eagles' loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He will have the procedure done in Philadelphia and the team hopes he can be back in six weeks or less, according to the report. The injury to Philadelphia's No. 2 running back comes at an inopportune time, as Saquon Barkley's status is also up in the air after he left Sunday's game with a hamstring injury. Coach Nick Sirianni left open the possibility of Barkley playing Sunday when the Eagles face the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

Chiefs' Thornton out months

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton is expected to miss 12 to 16 weeks after dislocating his left ankle and tearing ligaments in it, a person with knowledge of the injury told the Associated Press on Monday. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hadn't announced the details, said Thornton will have surgery this week. Thornton was having the best game of his career when he got hurt at the end of a 55-yard catch during Kansas City's 30-27 victory over Las Vegas. His ankle got caught beneath him and twisted at a gruesome angle after he was hauled down from behind. Thornton briefly stood up to celebrate and signal first down before going to the ground and being carted off the field. He had 5 catches for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns from Patrick Mahomes. The undefeated Chiefs (4-0) also lost wideout Rashee Rice earlier in the game to a hamstring injury. They have a bye this weekend.

Ovechkin plans to retire

Alex Ovechkin said Monday that his 22nd season in the NHL will be his last, beginning the farewell tour for the longtime Washington Capitals captain who holds the league's career goal-scoring record. Ovechkin addressed teammates to deliver the news before the team posted a message from him on social media. "It's sad, but it is what it is," Ovechkin said in his locker room address. "It's hard, but let's enjoy it and let's do some special things this year." Ovechkin signed a one-year contract this past summer and turned 41 on Sept. 17.

Medvedev hits fan with ball

Daniil Medvedev struck a spectator with a ball and was disqualified from his semifinal against Novak Djokovic at the China Open on Monday. The spectator was helped out of the arena holding a hand over his left eye. "I feel terribly sorry for him actually and I just hope he's OK," Medvedev said. Djokovic was serving for the match at 7-5, 5-3 when Medvedev hit the ball into the stands in apparent frustration. After a forehand volley winner from Djokovic, the ball bounced off the advertising boards and back toward Medvedev, who smacked a backhand that sailed into the front row.
