Former Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Tragically Passes Away
Duke Carlisle, the former Texas quarterback who was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1964 AFL Draft, has died at the age of 84.
Carlisle died Friday in Lockhart, Texas, following a seven-year battle with lung cancer. While his professional football career never included a regular-season appearance, his college career at Texas made him one of the most accomplished players of his era.
The Chiefs selected Carlisle in the sixth round of the 1964 AFL Draft with the 42nd overall pick. The Green Bay Packers also selected him that year, taking him in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. Carlisle signed with Green Bay but was released during training camp before spending the 1964 season on the Dallas Cowboys’ taxi squad. An injury eventually brought his playing career to an end.
Carlisle had already made a name for himself long before he entered the professional ranks. Playing under legendary Texas coach Darrell Royal, he was the starting quarterback for the 1963 Longhorns team that went a perfect 11-0 and won the school’s first national championship.
He was much more than just a quarterback, too. Carlisle played both ways and also saw time at safety. In a crucial 7-0 victory over Baylor, he came up with a late interception in the end zone to help Texas preserve its unbeaten season.
Then came one of the biggest performances of his career.
In the 1964 Cotton Bowl, Carlisle went up against Navy and Heisman Trophy winner Roger Staubach. Carlisle put together a spectacular performance, throwing for 234 yards and two touchdowns while finishing with 267 all-purpose yards. Texas cruised to a 28-6 victory, and Carlisle was named the game’s most valuable player.

That performance helped put Carlisle on the radar of professional teams, including Lamar Hunt’s Chiefs, who selected him later that year.
Although Carlisle never got the opportunity to play in a regular-season NFL or AFL game, his legacy was already firmly established in Texas football. He later earned an MBA from Texas and went into business, working as an investment banker in New York before eventually moving into the oil business.
Carlisle was inducted into the University of Texas Athletics Hall of Honor in 1974 and later entered the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame in 2000.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Emily Alford Carlisle, daughters Kathy Carlisle Asher and Eloise Carlisle Terry, and his brother Todd. His nephew, Cooper Carlisle, also went on to play in the NFL.
For Kansas City, Carlisle will always be part of the franchise’s early history. The Chiefs selected him during a pivotal era for the organization, even though an injury ultimately kept him from ever taking a regular-season snap.
