Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says the punishment that Manchester City faces following the recent guilty verdict on the Etihad side must be over multiple years.
Manchester City was found to be guilty of the vast majority of the 115 charges that the Premier League leveled at it, though it has since lodged an appeal against the decision and still maintains its innocence. It takes on Liverpool at Anfield this Sunday, and Carragher says the implications should go on as long as the wrongdoing.
"Now that we know that they’re guilty — yes, there’s an appeal, but now that they’ve got a big guilty verdict initially — I don’t think anybody wants to wait," Carragher told Sky Sports.

"It has to be done this season, because Man City need to be affected for next season.
"I know the word at the moment is sham; it’ll almost make the Premier League of this season, the title to be won would be a sham, if Man City went on to win that league with what we know has gone on.
"So it has to be done this season, and I think the punishment, whatever it should be, I don’t think it can be a one-off punishment for one season, because this has gone on for years and years, so I think the punishment should go on for years and years."

This weekend, Enzo Maresca's team will play Liverpool in the first match since the guilty verdict was delivered. That will add some extra edge to a fixture that has produced some blockbuster moments in recent years.
"They will get a very hot reception, but that is always the same when Man City come to Anfield," Carragher continued.
"Liverpool and Man City have been the two teams going for the titles and the big trophies over the last decade or so. They have got a really poor record at Anfield really for such a great team.
"That is because of the atmosphere and they have found it difficult. I don't think this will be any different, and there will be an extra spice to it. All eyes will be watching this game and it should be a cracker.

"I think it will be very difficult for City now this season in terms of going on to achieve anything. Of course there might be sanctions as the season goes on, but every away ground that they go to will be the best atmosphere in that stadium that season.
"Everyone is baying for blood, so it will be very difficult for their players and manager to achieve anything."
Liverpool.com says: As Carragher says, the punishment for such a sustained period of wrongdoing has to be huge. There is no precedent for it, but it has to last more than one season, with titles being stripped as well.
