Tyquan Thornton’s Injury Timeline Gives Chiefs One Reason to Hold Out Hope 1
The Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyquan Thornton suffered an injury during the Chiefs’ win over the Las Vegas Raiders. The injury will require surgery and could sideline the wide receiver for several months.
The injury adds to the Chiefs’ concerns at wide receiver as they prepare for the rest of the season. Thornton had emerged as an important part of the offense before the injury.

The injury occurred in the fourth quarter after Patrick Mahomes connected with Thornton on a 55-yard pass. Thornton reached the Raiders’ 5-yard line before being tackled. He suffered a dislocated left ankle and was taken off the field on a cart.
Further testing showed a left ankle dislocation with ligament damage. The injury requires surgery, and Thornton is expected to be placed on injured reserve soon.
Arrowhead Corner shared the update on X, writing, “#Chiefs WR Tyquan Thornton will need surgery after dislocating his ankle yesterday. He will be placed on injured reserve soon. The recovery timetable is expected to be 3–4 months, so there is a chance he could return for the playoffs in January.”
Thornton is expected to miss 12–16 weeks. If his recovery progresses as expected, he could return later in the season.
Thornton entered the Raiders game with six catches for 108 yards through the first three games. His five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns against Las Vegas moved his season totals to 11 receptions, 219 yards and two touchdowns.
The Chiefs will now await further updates on Thornton’s recovery process. The team is also moving forward with plans for its next game and will have to prepare its offense without Thornton.
Chiefs prepare for Chargers clash
The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for their Week 6 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers after starting the 2026 season 4-0. Kansas City has a Week 5 bye before hosting the Chargers on October 18. The game is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET at Arrowhead Stadium.
Patrick Mahomes, Kenneth Walker III and Travis Kelce will be key players for the Chiefs in the matchup. Mahomes has thrown for 1,037 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions this season. Walker has recorded 537 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns, while Kelce has 246 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Walker also carries a 14-game winning streak into the matchup.
The Chiefs will also use the bye week to monitor its injury situation. Josh Simmons remains a key injury concern because of his back issue. The offensive tackle is currently listed as out and plays a key role on the Chiefs’ offensive line.
Other key Chiefs players dealing with injuries will also be monitored during the break. Their availability will be important when Kansas City finalizes its lineup for the Chargers matchup.
Following Tyquan Thornton’s injury, the Chiefs will need to make some changes to their offensive setup. The bye gives the team extra time to adjust its offense and evaluate its available personnel. The Kansas City Chiefs will look to maintain their unbeaten start when action resumes after the bye week.
