Bruno Guimaraes has won Arsenal’s Emirates Goal of the Month award for September following his spectacular strike against Sunderland.
The Brazilian’s first goal for the Gunners earned 43 per cent of the supporters’ vote after helping Arsenal secure a 2-0 victory at the Stadium of Light.
Guimaraes finished comfortably ahead of Martin Odegaard, whose team move against Chelsea collected 19 per cent, while Max Dowman’s individual effort against Ipswich Town finished third with 15 per cent.
The winning goal came in the 58th minute of a difficult Premier League contest on Wearside.
Gabriel Magalhaes broke Sunderland’s defensive lines with a pass into Declan Rice, who laid the ball into Guimaraes’ path outside the penalty area.
The former Newcastle United midfielder then unleashed a powerful right-footed effort into the roof of the net to give Arsenal the lead.
It was also the culmination of an extraordinary 121-second spell which completely changed the direction of the game.
Sunderland had been presented with an opportunity to go ahead moments earlier after Ezri Konsa was penalised for a challenge on Dan Ballard.
David Raya produced a superb full-stretch save to divert Enzo Le Fée’s penalty onto the post before Guimaraes struck at the other end.
Raya’s intervention has since received recognition of its own, winning the Premier League’s Coca-Cola Save of the Month award for September.
It was the Spaniard’s fourth success in the competition, moving him outright second on the all-time list and one behind Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Guimaraes’ strike was also shortlisted for the Premier League Goal of the Month prize, although Brighton & Hove Albion defender Lewis Dunk ultimately collected that award.
Bukayo Saka later converted a stoppage-time penalty to complete Arsenal’s 2-0 win after Reinildo Mandava was dismissed for a second bookable offence.
The result maintained Arsenal’s perfect start to their Premier League title defence at the time, with four victories from their opening four matches.
Guimaraes’ award now gives the £75 million summer signing further recognition for a memorable first goal since swapping Newcastle for north London.
