Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has recalled the extraordinary moment Max Dowman convinced him he was ready to play several years above his age group.
Wilshere worked with Dowman while managing Arsenal’s Under-18s and handed the midfielder his debut at that level against Southampton in September 2023, when he was only 13.
Speaking on Stick to Football, Wilshere explained that his side were short of players after several youngsters had moved up to the Under-21s, prompting him to turn to Dowman.
“Max, and I don’t want to put too much pressure on him, but honestly, he played in my team at 13,” Wilshere said.
The current Luton Town manager recalled meeting Dowman and his father in the car park before the game and being immediately struck by the youngster’s confidence.
Dowman began on the bench before Wilshere decided to introduce him with Arsenal leading Southampton 2-0.
The former England international attempted to protect the teenager by advising him to avoid physical battles against opponents as much as five years older.
Instead, Dowman immediately demonstrated why Arsenal already considered him capable of competing at that level.
“He picked up the ball, I promise you, he dribbled around five players, he squared it, and we’re 3-0 up,” Wilshere said. “I just looked at my assistant, like, I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Wilshere has subsequently revealed that Dowman’s early performances were so impressive that he invited his own father to watch the youngster, who eventually told him Dowman was better than Wilshere had been at the same age.
Three years later, that early assessment looks increasingly significant.
Dowman became the second-youngest player in Premier League history when Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta introduced him against Leeds United in August 2025, aged 15 years and 235 days.
He then surpassed James Vaughan’s long-standing record to become the competition’s youngest goalscorer last season, scoring against Everton aged 16 years and 73 days.
Dowman also became the youngest player to start a Premier League match on the final day of Arsenal’s title-winning campaign.
His opportunities have remained carefully managed this season, although he has already scored twice in the Carabao Cup.
Wilshere’s recollection therefore provides another indication of just how early Dowman’s unusual ability became apparent inside Arsenal’s academy.
