Five Everton Bosman Transfer Bargains That Could Bolster David Moyes' Squad
There is no getting away from the fact that Everton will be shopping on a budget for the foreseeable future and will struggle to attract their top transfer targets without European football.
It is a vicious circle. The Toffees need a bigger budget to sign the players who can secure European football.
There is no way that David Moyes could manage his current squad playing in mid-week as well as the three domestic competitions; it is simply too small.
The veteran boss will need all his managerial acumen and nous to add quality and depth over the next couple of windows and should have one eye on a list of players coming into the last year of their respective contracts to seal a bargain or two.
Five Pre-Contract Bargains for Everton to Target
James Tarkovski isn’t getting any younger, nor is Michael Keane, who will be out of contract at the end of the season and needs to be replaced.
Then there is the previously reported interest in Jarrad Branthwaite; Moyes isn’t stupid and will know that the England international won’t spend his peak years at the Hill Dickinson.
These are the players who Everton could land without paying a bumper transfer fee. Contract statuses are correct at the time of publication via Transfermarkt.
Calvin Bassey
At 26, Bassey is approaching his prime and has been a consistent performer for Fulham since signing from Ajax for the best part of £20m.
The Nigerian international would be an instant favourite of Moyes, capable of playing in the middle, on the left of a back three, at left-back, or left wing-back.
His passing has improved since bursting onto the scene in 2021/22 at Rangers and earning a place in the Europa League team of the season, with penalty kicks all that stopped him from being named man of the match.
Richarlison
There has been talk of a return to Merseyside for Richarlison and the former Everton maverick, but his role would be different from his first spell, should he head back up the road after a frustrating time since moving to Tottenham.
Frozen out at Spurs, the Brazilian will be keen to sort his future out, and he might choose security and a club that he knows suits him.
Could he cope with Jack Grealish being the main man, or being second fiddle behind Thierno Barry though?

Tyrick Mitchell
When the transfer window closed, there were three key areas that were significantly weaker than when it opened – left-back, centre-back, and striker.
Moyes needs Premier League-ready players who can settle in immediately and understand what will be needed at Everton.
A solid defender, Tyrick Mitchell can also contribute in the attacking third and is routinely one of the most consistent full-backs in the league.
Kaoru Mitoma
One of the problems that Moyes has had to contend with is a lack of attacking options. The departure of Iliman Ndiaye has left a sizeable hole in the attack in terms of a ball carrier and experienced wide man.
Mitoma’s best attribute is his dribbling, and he could be the perfect foil for the likes of Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Every forward line needs pace, and the 29-year-old has it in abundance.
Jacob Murphy
The two options on the right are Brennan Johnston, who has yet to catch fire, and the much-improved Tyler Dibling, a player Moyes has praised recently, but who is still adapting to the demands of playing for a big club.
He might be 31; however, Jacob Murphy would be the safe pair of hands that Moyes could be looking for.
Murphy, playing as a right wing-back or right winger, made Alexander Isak look good with his delivery from the flank.
The Last Word
A small transfer budget doesn’t mean that Everton need to scrimp on quality, and there are plenty of players who would jump at the chance of signing for Moyes.
The higher up the table that the Toffees are in January, the better, especially if players are starting to look elsewhere.
With both depth and first XI-ready players needed, this list could be what takes Everton from mid-table mediocrity back to the promised land of European football.
