Greg Newsome II recorded his first interception as a Giant on Sunday, and that deserves some attention beyond a line in the game recap. He also had two passes defensed and seven tackles, four of them solo, in the Giants win over Arizona.
An interception ends a possession. Getting hands on throws helps, too, and Newsome was involved as a tackler rather than leaving all that work to the safeties. The tackle total needs some caution, though: seven stops by themselves tell us very little about how well somebody covered.
New York won 36-24 and improved to 3-1. It still took a late defensive stop to protect the result, which should temper any claim that the secondary has everything figured out. Newsome helped win the game; his interception doesn’t turn the whole afternoon into flawless coverage.
Giants got the kind of production they wanted from Newsome
Newsome joined New York this offseason to give the cornerback group an experienced option. Sunday’s production is the kind of return that makes the move useful: a takeaway, contested throws and involvement in the tackling rather than a corner simply surviving his assignments.

I’d be careful about using the interception as proof he’s suddenly shutting down an entire side of the field. That conclusion needs more than one play, and we don’t have to oversell him to appreciate the game. Two passes defensed and a turnover already describe an afternoon that helped the Giants.
Newsome’s interception didn’t come with the long return that tends to dominate highlight packages. It still removed an Arizona scoring opportunity and put the ball back in New York’s hands. Those possessions count just as much while the game is still being decided.
The encouraging part is that the Giants got useful play from an offseason addition at a position where they need dependable coverage. Newsome has a chance to make that contribution routine. I’d rather see a run of well-covered passes and clean tackles than spend the next month waiting for another interception to judge him.
