Two match-winning goals help Arsenal star secure monthly honour

Martin Odegaard has been voted Arsenal’s men’s Player of the Month for September after playing a decisive role in two important victories.

The Gunners captain collected an emphatic 65 per cent of the supporters’ vote following a month in which he scored winning goals against Chelsea and Napoli.

Odegaard finished ahead of David Raya, Bruno Guimaraes and Ezri Konsa to claim the award after coming second in the club’s August poll.

His first decisive contribution arrived in Arsenal’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

Morgan Rogers had given the visitors the lead after only 77 seconds before Kai Havertz brought Arsenal level midway through the first half.

Odegaard completed the turnaround shortly after half-time, finishing a flowing Arsenal move to secure all three points for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s side.

The midfielder’s performance earned further recognition when supporters voted him the Premier League’s Player of the Matchweek.

Odegaard created four chances and completed 24 line-breaking passes against Chelsea, eventually collecting 31 per cent of the vote to narrowly beat Liverpool striker Alexander Isak.

His influence continued three days later as Arsenal began their Champions League campaign with a difficult trip to Napoli.

The reigning Premier League champions had been frustrated for much of the contest before their captain delivered again in the 75th minute.

Odegaard found space before sending a fine effort in off the post to earn Arsenal a 1-0 victory in Naples.

It represented an encouraging continuation of the Norwegian’s strong start to the campaign after an injury-hit 2025/26 season.

Odegaard managed only one goal and six assists from 24 Premier League appearances last term but began the new campaign by scoring in Arsenal’s 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

He has since remained an important figure as Arsenal attempt to defend the league title they won last season.

The 27-year-old also became only the third captain to lead Arsenal to a Premier League title, following Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira.

His September award arrives shortly after another demanding international break with Norway, where he completed all four matches despite briefly suffering an ankle problem.

Odegaard has been granted several days of rest before returning to Arsenal later this week, with Arteta’s side hosting Leeds United on Saturday.

The break should give Arsenal’s captain valuable recovery time after a September in which his decisive contributions were recognised overwhelmingly by the club’s supporters.
