San Diego FC v Club Tijuana
Over the weekend, European reports started to emerge linking Liverpool with rising star 17-year-old Mexican attacking midfielder Gilberto Mora. Now, outlets a little closer to the player are now joining the fray.
According to Mexico City-based, American-owned broadcaster TUDN, European interest in the youngster is currently high—and nobody is more interested in signing him than Liverpool. In fact, they claim that via the player’s agents, Tijuana have been made aware of a $50M offer from the Reds.
We’re going to assume that’s in American dollars, which would come out to about £38M. It’s a fee that seems exceptionally high—and highly unlikely, in our opinion—but the alternative of it being fifty million pesos works out to just about £2M which seems even less likely.
Mexico are a footballing nation that have historically punched well below their weight given population size and love of the game, but few youngsters in their history have attracted the kind of buzz Mora is currently recieving.
Despite his young age, he’s already played 62 senior games for Liga MX side Tijuana and made 13 senior Mexico appearances. In what would be an unusual move, the latest reports out of Mexico seem to suggest he was held out of their most recent national team game due to ongoing transfer negotiations.
Given that’s normally only something that would be considered by a selling club rather than a national team—and even then usually only while the transfer window is actually open—is eyebrow-raising, perhaps anything is possible if a deal is at an advanced stage and given Mora’s young age.
Alternately, of course, he was kept out due to a minor knock and the Mexican football press are spinning stories out of that and this past weekend’s emerging transfer rumours.
