Troubling TreVeyon Henderson Stat Explains Patriots' Backfield Decisions

The [Patriots](https://nesn.com/new-england-patriots)' running back usage frustrated fantasy owners and fans alike at times in 2025, with TreVeyon Henderson and Rhamondre Stevenson effectively splitting carries despite Henderson putting together an efficient year.

Since Henderson returned from an injury that cost him Week 1, it's been more of the same. After a fairly heavy workload in his first game back, Henderson received 22 carries over the Patriots' last two games while Stevenson received 20.

Stevenson has largely struggled, averaging better than four yards per carry only once in four games, but the Patriots have been reluctant to hand the keys to Henderson. One stat may prove why Stevenson remains at the heart of New England's offense.

Henderson ranks last among all qualified running backs in the NFL in success rate, compared to Stevenson ranking 13th out of 51, The Athletic's Chad Graff noted, citing TruMedia.

> Here's why Patriots coaches seem to trust Rhamondre Stevenson more than TreVeyon Henderson. Stevenson's success rate of 43% ranks 13th of 51 running backs with at least 20 carries. Henderson ranks 51st out of 51 running backs in success rate. https://t.co/mtdKWEwTEK

"Success" is defined as gaining at least 40 percent of yards to go on first down, at least 60 percent on second down or picking up a third down. Henderson hasn't met those marks often, and his raw numbers say the same, as he is averaging only 3.0 yards per carry over his last two games.

Stevenson hasn't been much more efficient, but as teams rely more on analytics, his success rate might serve as reason for the Patriots to keep trusting him and hoping better results will come rather than making Henderson the focal point out of their backfield.

Here's a look at Henderson's numbers so far in 2026.

Henderson has struggled early this season, averaging only 3.7 yards per carry after putting up more than five yards per carry as a rookie. Henderson isn't necessarily known for his work as a pass-catcher, but he has just one reception through three games after hauling in 35 catches for 221 yards last season.

While Henderson received more carries than Stevenson in each of the last two games, Stevenson received more touches thanks to his role catching passes.
