Philadelphia Eagles Legend Announces Retirement Ahead of Week 5 1
The Philadelphia Eagles have not been able to play to the level they were expecting to early in the season. With an older roster, things are going to happen to force players to miss games. However, they experienced something not many were expecting from one of the franchise cornerstones. Let’s take a look at what happened and what it means going forward.

The Eagles were able to win on Sunday without one of their premier offensive linemen in the game, and now we know a little bit more of what happened. After missing Week 4 due to personal matters, Lane Johnson took to social media on Tuesday afternoon and announced his retirement from the NFL, along with his reasoning behind the decision.
“I deeply wanted to gut it out for one more year; to take the field with my brothers for one last season. But after a lo of reflecion, I’ve realized that my personal and family priorities in my life have changed. Right now, it is critical that I focus on my mental health. I owe it to my teammates, coaches, the organization and the fans to have my head and heart 100 percen in the game. And right now my heart is telling me that it’s time to say goodbye to football.”
Philadelphia Eagles Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie also posted the following statement regarding Johnson’s announcement.
“Lane Johnson is an all-time Eagle and one of the best players ever to play his position in NFL history. Lane was a major contributor to our team success for 14 seasons, helping to bring two Super Bowl Championships and many other memorable moments to the organization and the city of Philadelphia… We appreciate everything Lane has contributed to our organization, and we wish him and his family nothing but the very best.”
Do not be surprised to see the Philadelphia Eagles retire Lane Johnson’s jersey in the not-so-distant future. The six-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro right tackle has been one of the best players at the position. He played in 186 career games (regular season and postseason), and was one of the leaders for the franchise since being drafted fourth in the 2013 NFL Draft.
In terms of the Philadelphia Eagles, expect to see rookie Markel Bell become the starting right tackle. It will be interesting to see how the offensive line for the Eagles looks without one of their stallworths protecting Jalen Hurts.
