Mike McCarthy Signals Bigger Role for Robert Spears-Jennings After Strong Special Teams Play 1
The Pittsburgh Steelers have had to rely on young players recently, and rookie safety Robert Spears-Jennings is maximizing the few opportunities that situation brought. Head coach Mike McCarthy takes notice of the seventh-round pick, whose impact looks set to pave the way for broader opportunities on the team.
Specifically, Spears-Jennings’ recent outings on the special teams have proven critical for the franchise and his early trajectory weeks into his first season. He takes a path common among late-round rookies like him, but in a way that could transform his rankings going forward.

Spears-Jennings embraced the responsibilities that came with featuring on the special teams unit. His outings have impressed McCarthy, who recently ranked the 22-year-old as one of Pittsburgh’s most productive special teams players.
“He’s ready. In my opinion, I think he has had the most production on special teams as far as his opportunities. He’s another young man chomping at the bit, and he will definitely. I see him getting more opportunities moving forward.”

Spears-Jennings’ work has also begun to translate into opportunities on defense. He put up a decent showing against the Cleveland Browns when he registered an interception after edge rusher Jack Sawyer tipped the pass at the line of scrimmage. Although the Steelers ultimately lost the game 27-24, Spears-Jennings provided another reason why the franchise should take him a little more seriously.
Beyond simply praising Spears-Jennings for his contributions on special teams, McCarthy is linking his output to additional roles in the future. Considering he was a late-round rookie, there’s little surprise he has had to earn every opportunity in his first season.
His interception against Cleveland was particularly remarkable, given that it came after the Steelers had fielded him in a more defensive role. Granted, Sawyer’s role in getting his hands on the football was instrumental there. But Spears-Jennings was handy enough to finish the play, giving his side a crucial memory while they continued fighting for a comeback in the game.
The Steelers entered the season with considerably more established hands in their secondary. That meant the Sawyer route to the pitch was to excel in other areas, something the youngster has succeeded in so far.
Going forward, the Steelers clearly have a lot of work to do defensively after giving up 27 points to the Cleveland Browns in Week 4. The Steelers have already faced considerable movement in their secondary. Every new chance places more importance on Pittsburgh having young defensive backs capable of stepping into bigger roles without becoming liabilities.
Spears-Jennings has a chance to become one of those players without immediately becoming a starter or transforming Pittsburgh’s secondary all alone. The Steelers only need him to keep doing what got McCarthy’s praise in the first place.
