Report | Rovers 1-0 Liverpool U21

It was a night to remember for Dylan Hartley who became Rovers' youngest ever player as they beat Liverpool U21 in the Jersey Mike's Trophy.

Grant McCann made six changes to the starting line-up that opened Rovers' campaign last month, while Hartley joined youngsters Ethan Hodgett and Ashton Swales on the bench.

Rovers showed their intent in the opening minute of the match, with a curling corner from Tommi O'Reilly landing on the head of Brandon Hanlan, who nodded just wide.

Liverpool immediately responded with a flurry of corners of their own, before Joshua Sonni-Lambie managed to get a shot away, but the deflected attempt caused Josh Clarke little trouble.

Minutes later, Jordan Thomas' tricky feet allowed him to knock the ball onto his right foot before he looked to place the ball into the net, but Liverpool's backline was in formation to keep the hosts at bay.

Robbie Gotts was the next to get a shot away as the tenth minute approached, as Isaac Hutchinson's ball into the middle allowed the midfielder to unleash a long-range strike that was just too high.

Rovers looked to make use of their set pieces once again minutes later, with Neill Byrne's diving header reaching Isaac Hutchinson's corner, but his attempt dribbled across the face of goal and just wide of the post.

McCann's side continued to push for a goal in the opening 20 minutes, as Tom Nixon sprinted forward into space and got a powerful shot away, but the Reds' goalkeeper was able to palm it to safety.

Rovers continued to dominate possession inside Liverpool's half, and it was James Husband who carved open the next chance, looking to slot a threatening through-ball into the box, but Liverpool's defence were there once again to clear.

Thomas had proven to be a real threat in the first half an hour, and as Liverpool were forced to put two defenders on the winger, he almost pulled off the spectacular as his wide ball into the box came off the cross bar.

Five minutes later, Liverpool rattled the woodwork themselves, as Will Wright latched onto a loose ball and looked to chip Clarke from distance, but the bar kept the scoreline even.

Gotts was a real handful for Liverpool in the first half, pulling off another powerful effort from the edge of the box, but Harvey Davies was able to prevent the opener as half-time approached.

However, Rovers' consistent pressure eventually paid off, as Tommi O'Reilly netted his first goal of the campaign with only seconds left of the first half. James Husband nutmegged the Liverpool defender before squaring a ball into the box, and while Owen Bailey's close-range shot was initially saved, O'Reilly managed to score the rebound to send Rovers into the lead at the break.

McCann made a double change heading into the second half, with Husband and O'Reilly making way for Jay McGrath and Hakeeb Adelakun.

It was an end-to-end start as the second 45 minutes kicked off, as Clarke was called to action following shots from Wright and Joseph Bradshaw, with the goalkeeper making an excellent double save to keep Rovers' lead.

Minutes later, Gotts forced another stretching save from Davies, as Bailey pulled the ball across for his teammate inside the box.

Rovers opted to make a third change as an hour passed, with Harry Clifton replacing Bailey to make his first appearance since the meeting with Plymouth Argyle last month.

As 65 minutes passed, the visitors carved open a chance of their own, as Wright knocked the ball onto his right foot and looked to curl a ball past Clarke, but his shot went just wide. Some nice footwork from James McConnell then allowed him to pull the trigger outside the box, but his effort skied over the bar.

As Rovers entered the final ten minutes, history was made as 15-year-old Dylan Hartley broke Alick Jeffrey's record as he was subbed on for Hanlan, while Ashton Swales also made his debut as he replaced Thomas.

Liverpool pushed for an equaliser as the game came to a close, with O'Connor forcing another save from Clarke inside the box, but they were unable to take away the goalkeeper's clean sheet after a positive performance in between the sticks.

A home win for Rovers puts them second in their group after two matches.
