The Philadelphia Eagles may have received some encouraging news regarding one of their most important defensive players.
Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Tuesday that the team is “hopeful” that cornerback Quinyon Mitchell will be able to return for Week 5 after suffering a knee injury in Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
“We’re hopeful,” Fangio said when asked about Mitchell's chances of playing this week, via Jeff McLane.
Mitchell left Philadelphia's 24-20 loss to the Rams in the third quarter after appearing to tweak his knee while making a tackle. He was unable to return to the game, leaving the Eagles without one of their most important pieces in the secondary.
The timing of the injury is particularly important for Philadelphia, which is preparing for a Week 5 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. The Eagles are already dealing with several injuries across the roster, making Mitchell's status another situation to monitor throughout the week.
Mitchell's status should become clearer Wednesday, when the Eagles' first official practice participation of the week will provide a better indication of where he stands. Whether he is able to participate on a limited basis or take part fully could be an important step toward determining his availability for Sunday.

The Eagles certainly have reason to be optimistic, but there is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding Mitchell.
Philadelphia will likely be cautious with its star cornerback rather than risk making the knee injury worse this early in the season. For now, the Eagles can only hope that Mitchell is able to get back on the practice field Wednesday.
