Bo Nix and the Broncos will be just fine

There has been a lot of hand-wringing this week over Bo Nix missing a few reads and the Denver Broncos offense stumbling around like a drunken sailor in games.

Here’s the thing. Quarterbacks get better over time. It’s one of the few positions that doesn’t have an age wall around the 30 year mark. This is why Sam Darnold is a Super Bowl champion after spending his first six seasons as a first-round bust. He is now 30 and 30-7 over his last three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. He found the right situation.

Is he a Hall of Fame quarterback now? No, but he’s a decent starting quarterback. I would put Bo Nix well ahead schedule in comparison to guy like Darnold and I would put him on par with some of the better quarterbacks in the league after 2+ years in the league.

The idea that Denver should move on from Bo is just absurd to me. He’ll be just fine and the Nick Wright’s of the world will be in shambles when it all comes together.

It’s wild that this even needs to be said. Or would you rather have Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch, Brock Osweiler, Case Keenum, Joe Flacco, Drew Lock, Brandon Allen, Jeff Driskel, Brett Rypien, Kendall Hinton, Teddy Bridgewater, Russell Wilson, or Jarrett Stidham under center? In case anyone needs to be reminded how we had been living our fan lives post-Peyton Manning. 😂

I SUPPORT BO NIX

I don't care how unpopular this is. You can check the all22 and see Bo is not comfortable right now. You can see he is struggling to see the field and struggling to hit targets. Athletes are people. They get into slumps. They are more aware of the quality of their performance than any fan is. We don't need to pile on with obvious statements about his quality of play. It's time for Denver fans to show support for their guy going through a tough stretch with a long season ahead of him. There comes a time when support is more valuable than criticism. I think we are there with Bo. We know he can lock in and be next to unstoppable. We know the way he is capable of playing. It's time for Denver to start supporting a guy going through tough times and have his back. I didn't think I'd be the one to have to say this, but it needs to be said.

It's time for the fans to have Bo's back. No more boo's. Remember when Trea Turner was going through that slump and Philly chose to embrace him? It's time for Denver to stop booing and provide support for Bo whenever possible. He's our guy. If you want him to play better, support him. Cheer for him. Let him know you have his back. Be better fans.

A keystone moment for Nix. The training wheels are off. Time to QB.

Just some late night thoughts that came through my head while watching MNF (holy cow the Falcons have a run game. Wouldn't that be nice!?).

Something that I think we've all been kind of overlooking through these first four weeks is that even after a QB breaks through in the NFL and gets to a certain level of play, they have to CONSTANTLY work on their game their entire career to keep their job and stay at that level which is something every long-term starter eventually figures out (usually after they have a down season).

They can't just assume they're going to play the same way they did this season as they did the last. That's yet another one of the many reasons these guys get paid the big bucks and are so often the stars of their team. They shoulder a truly ridiculous load year to year and even the best of them have down years. I challenge anyone to name me a current starter who hasn't had a down year. You can't and won't.

This is all to say... I think Bo is going to get out of this early slump eventually just as he has twice before in his career. But I also think he is still very much in the educational maelstrom of his position, working on both trying to elevate his level of play to a new floor AND simultaneously adjusting to a league that has CLEARLY adjusted to him and put him on the struggle bus. This is the phase of a 1st round QBs career where franchise patience becomes paramount. Jacksonville and Carolina were very patient with Trevor Lawrence and Bryce Young and those two combined din't have even a quarter of the early career success that Nix did. They're now emerging stars and rightfully enjoying some of the accolades and fanfare that Bo got a fortunate taste of his in his first two seasons.

And let me be clear, absolutely none of this miniature late night essay is to offer any excuse for Nix's play. He has been very poor by the standards he himself set in his first two years and while there have still been good moments in this young season (JAX and LA), there's been a very detectable shift in the way the media and fanbase is treating him now. These kinds of struggles in 2024 and 2025 were easily brushed away with excuses about it only being year 2, his experience, the winning, et cetera.

Now it's year 3, where historically the pressure ramps up. The coddling and hand holding is over, Bo. Welcome to the show. You're no longer a kid. You're an NFL vet. A young one... but still a vet. Welcome to the rest of your career, #10. You'll be proving that you can still do it, no matter how many times you've done it before.

Finally... For those who think that Nix's tenure in Denver ends this offseason... Keep dreaming y'all. It's been said a billion times on this page but QBs that can do what Nix did in his first two years and what he continues to be able to do in Q4 don't grow on trees in the draft. The 2024 QB draft class already looks to be one of the best ever but that doesn't mean it's going to randomly become an every year occurence. A year like that is a once in a blue moon calibre event. And don't think free agency is any better/likelier. A franchise-changer hitting FA is an even RARER occurrence. No magical replacement is barging through the door at Dove Valley to restart the QB carousel that put us in hell for almost a decade. Tua Turndaballova got 6 years in Miami without winning a single damn game under 32 degrees, Daniel Jones scammed the Giants for 6 years with a record of 24-44 and his physical inability to stop turning the ball over, and two #1 overall picks in Bryce Young and Trevor Lawrence took THIS long to finally start emerging. Denver would obviously upgrade at the position if they could, but every franchise is operating under that exact same mindset at every given time with every position. Could doesn't always mean 'can'. Bet on Nix being your starter to the end of 2028.

Barring a truly ridiculous collapse, Denver will almost certainly give Bo as much runway as they possibly can in the form of a 5th year option and give him this season plus the next two to reach that next level, a decision they will no doubt make comfortably because of the financial can they'll be able to kick down the road for one more season (30 million vs the $50-60 million market salary for a QB) and because of what he's already accomplished in his tenure here in Denver, which is easily among the most impressive for any 2nd year QB ever.

This is a challenging league, but nevertheless a patient one when it comes to the most difficult position in professional sports. I'm pretty darn sure the 2026 season is going to get wackier than it already has for us but that's the inherent beauty of the sport right? You just never know what you're going to see.

See y'all Sunday afternoon!

3-3 or 4-2

At the begining of the season many people were saying this was a better team but could very well end up with a worse record. I am in total agreement with that statement. 3-3 over the first six would out them in good shape to finish the season.

Chiefs 4-0

Jags 3-1

Rams 2-2

49ers 4-0

The impatience is madening at times but, I get it. I'm hoping a heavy dose of Coleman will propel this team back to the playoffs. This team is nicked up and needs the depth to step up, which I believe they can.

Cheers from CA!
