Arsenal's start to the new season has provided plenty of encouragement. But there are already signs that Mikel Arteta still has some work to do with his squad.

‌

The Gunners have won seven of their first eight matches in all competitions, including a convincing 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield. However, their perfect-looking record was dented by a shock 3-0 loss to Brighton before the international break, giving Arteta plenty to ponder ahead of Saturday's return to Premier League action against Leeds.

‌

While attention will understandably turn towards getting back to winning ways at the weekend, Arsenal's longer-term plans are also beginning to take shape. The club allowed three forwards to leave during the summer but brought in only one replacement, leaving them looking somewhat light in attack.

And they could end up losing another forward in January, with two major European clubs reportedly monitoring the player. Here is a look at the latest news surrounding the Gunners.

Madueke targeted by two clubs

Arsenal winger Noni Madueke has emerged as a potential target for Atletico Madrid and Juventus, with both clubs reportedly considering a move for him when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Madueke, who joined Arsenal from Chelsea for £50million last summer, has seen his involvement drop dramatically this season. The 24-year-old has played just twice in the Premier League, both appearances coming from the substitutes' bench, and has accumulated only 27 minutes of league football.

His other starts have come in the Community Shield and Arsenal's League Cup third-round win over Ipswich last month. That is a stark contrast to his role at the start of last season, when Madueke started four of Arsenal's first five Premier League matches before a knee problem brought his run to an abrupt halt.

Despite struggling for game-time, the winger has reportedly attracted interest from abroad, with both Atletico and Juventus considering a move for the England international, who was left out of Thomas Tuchel's most recent Three Lions squad. According to The Telegraph, any move in January would likely be structured as a loan rather than a permanent transfer.

Arsenal are under little pressure to make a decision given that Madueke still has almost four years left on his contract. However, if his lack of opportunities continues, a temporary spell elsewhere could offer him the regular first-team football he is currently missing and allow Arsenal the chance to reassess his future ahead of the summer.

Fabregas 'given green light' to join Arsenal

Cesc Fabregas could have a clear path back to Arsenal if he eventually decides that the time is right to take charge at the Emirates Stadium.

The former Gunners midfielder has made an impressive transition into management since taking over at Como in 2024. Reports have claimed that his contract contains a clause allowing him to leave for former clubs Barcelona, Arsenal or Chelsea without the need for a substantial compensation fee.

Como president Mirwan Suwarso did not reject those claims when questioned about the clause. Instead, he made it clear that Fabregas - who also owns a minority stake in the club - would be allowed to pursue the next opportunity in his career whenever he chooses.

"He doesn't need a clause to go anywhere he wants," Suwarso told Piers Morgan's Football Uncensored show. "In a business like this, he's a friend more than anything else. He can go wherever he wants, whenever he wants.

"I could even say if tomorrow he calls me and says, 'Hey, I want to go to Leverkusen'. I would say if that's something you want to do then go. I don't need any compensation."

Fabregas spent the majority of his playing career at Arsenal, so speculation linking him with a return to north London is unlikely to disappear. His standing as a coach has also increased considerably over the past couple of years.

He helped Como earn promotion to Serie A in 2024 and then oversaw the club's best-ever finish in the Italian top flight last season, guiding them to fourth place and securing Champions League football for the first time in their history.

That said, there is little suggestion Arsenal are preparing to part company with Arteta. The Gunners boss continues to deliver strong results and there is no obvious indication that he is looking to move on.

Fabregas may therefore have to wait for his opportunity to return to the club where he made his name. For now, at least.
