Cowboys’ Joey Porter Jr. news considered ‘good’ after Steelers trade image
Right now, it seems like newly acquired Dallas Cowboys cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is content to play out his current contract.
With the Pittsburgh Steelers, Porter wasn't willing to do so, which is why he was sent to Dallas. What truly went on behind the scenes in Pittsburgh remains unclear, but it's an interesting situation nonetheless. As for the Cowboys, some were worried he'd expect a contract right away, but all reports indicate he's more than willing to play out his current deal.
The latest reports should be considered good news, according to one writer who recently examined Porter's contract situation. For the Cowboys, this should be ideal, since they might not have to give him exactly what others suggested in the past.
“This does count as good news for the Cowboys, because there was a widespread assumption floating in NFL circles that the problem for Porter would be that he is asking too much, contract-wise, of the team. But a deal starting at $28 million is right in line with Porter’s market value, which is reported at $27.4 million per year per Spotrac.
“The issue was not the up-front price, but the length of the team and the security that would bring. That’s promising for the Cowboys if they decided they want to keep Porter,” Sean Deveney wrote.
Giving Porter a bit less than $30 million per year seems fair when you consider the rest of the cornerback market.
He's not exactly as talented as some of the other highest-paid corners in the NFL, at least he hasn't proven to be yet, but he's worth about that $30 million-per-year mark.
