Tottenham Hotspur are set to play their part in a £98million boost to the UK economy as they welcome the NFL back to the capital.

The annual NFL London Games hit N17 on Sunday with 60,907 fans packed into the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to watch the Indianapolis Colts beat the designated home side Washington Commanders 30-13. Regular season games have taken place at the new stadium since its opening in 2019 through a deal between Spurs and the NFL that lasts until the 2029/30 season and it is likely to be renewed due to the success over the years.

The north London club's home has a retractable pitch which allows for the sport to be played on the surface below, with the proper sightlines, and it was designed as the first purpose-built NFL stadium outside of America. The huge revenue streams from the NFL games and other events at the ground have helped the north London remain within financial fair play limits when it comes to spending big in the transfer market.

It is also creating money for the UK economy with the crowds attending the NFL London Games expected to spend up to £98m this month – with the average fan spending £453 across tickets, travel, accommodation, food and drink, merchandise and entertainment.

New research from American Express, the official payments partner of the NFL, has stated that spending across the capital was, on average, 10 per cent higher during the 2025 NFL Games Weekends compared with the previous year.

Their survey found that 91 per cent of fans who plan to attend a London Games match travel from outside London and 70 per cent plan to stay for at least two to three nights. Half of match-attending fans have previously bought or expect to buy official NFL merchandise, such as team jerseys, hats and souvenirs and 34 per cent expect to spend on American-style food and drinks.

Half of those surveyed said that attending an NFL London Games match feels like a bigger occasion than attending a typical sporting event, the majority asked saying that the overall experience surrounding these fixtures is an important part of the appeal.

In all 42 NFL regular season games have been played in London since 2007, welcoming more than three million fans to stadiums, and creating more than £2 billion in economic impact.

This Sunday the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Jacksonville Jaguars at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before the NFL London Games end with the Houston Texans taking on the Jaguars at Wembley Stadium on Sunday October 18.
