With uncertainty surrounding Kai Havertz’s availability after the international break, Arsenal may need Mikel Merino or Viktor Gyokeres to lead the line. Merino could now be the favourite after scoring twice for Spain against Croatia.
Originally a midfielder, Merino has often looked more effective when operating in attack. He demonstrated that quality again after coming off the bench to score a brace, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Spain appeared set to lose their long unbeaten run after Croatia took a 1-0 lead and controlled the match for much of the first half. Before Merino entered the game, it seemed the hosts had a strong chance of claiming a memorable victory.
Merino changes the match
Merino was introduced at half-time and quickly changed the contest. He equalised in the second half before scoring again late in the match to complete Spain’s comeback.
His two goals helped the world champions secure a 2-1 victory and extend their impressive unbeaten run. The performance also provided Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta with an encouraging reminder of Merino’s attacking qualities.
Merino has mainly played in midfield for Arsenal this season, but he has previously shown that he can operate effectively as a forward. His physical strength, movement and ability to finish chances make him a useful alternative in attack.

Arsenal considers its options
Havertz’s injury could force Arteta to decide whether Merino or Gyokeres should start in the centre forward role. Gyokeres has also performed well for Sweden during the international break, scoring in each of their four matches.
However, the Swedish striker has not yet fully established himself in Arteta’s Arsenal system since joining from Sporting. Merino could therefore have an advantage because his style is more similar to Havertz’s and would allow Arsenal to maintain a familiar approach.
Merino’s form for Spain has strengthened his case, but Gyokeres remains a natural striker and could still be preferred. Arteta may also use Merino from the bench if he decides that Gyokeres should start.
