Manchester City legend Shaun Wright-Phillips has recalled the impacts of positional depth during his career as Enzo Maresca juggles a breadth of attacking options.

Shaun Wright-Phillips shone across two spells at Manchester City racking up a total of 217 outings in Sky Blue, standing as a memorable component of the club's past in a career spanning through both before and after the 2008 Abu Dhabi Group takeover.

In September, the former Manchester City, Chelsea and England winger, now 44-years-old, returned to the screen by entering into primetime BBC show Strictly Come Dancing as a celebrity contestant.

With the summer acquisition of Allan Elias from Palmeiras along with Senegal international Iliman Ndiaye arriving on deadline day, Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca finds himself in a spot of bother regarding routinely selecting his attacking forces.

Academy product Phil Foden vying for a place in the line-up also provides an extra thought bubble for the Italian head coach, with stalwart Antoine Semenyo and returning Jeremy Doku looking like steady options out wide.

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has outlined his vision for Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden in his starting XI.

Despite what might threaten to present a problem in squad dynamics, City continue their unrelenting start to the 2026/27 season, having won seven consecutive matches including a mammoth derby day victory over Manchester United despite being a man down.

Maresca’s men are set to regroup for on-field action in blue after a three-week international break, during which an independent commission declared the club guilty of breaching the Premier League's financial rules on 114 counts between 2009-18.

The club continue to fiercely deny the findings and nature of the decision and have since filed a formal appeal, with proceedings set to begin across the next few weeks before any punishment can be prescribed.

You couldn't ask for a better situation as a manager, says Shaun Wright-Phillips

Speaking exclusively to City Xtra on behalf of OLBG, Shaun Wright-Phillips spoke on his experiences in highly-competitive playing squads throughout his 18-year professional career.

"I would say Chelsea when I first went there, because in my eyes Mourinho was the first person that started with this squad rotation, with the amount of games and amount of players we had at the club," he said on challenges breaking through a crowded squad.

“Then when I went back to City, it started to get like that as well. I think it’s a good thing to a degree. When I was at Chelsea, whether Joe Cole or [Damien] Duffer or [Arjen] Robben were in front of me, or vice versa - we were all rooting for each other.

"All it does is make you raise your game and keep your standards very, very high, which only benefits the team and the club.

“If that rotation is used correctly, and you time it right - you get him in when he’s on his hot streak, he’s hungry to prove you wrong and everything’s going his way - you couldn’t ask for a better situation as a manager.”

Antoine Semenyo has started each of Manchester City’s first five Premier League matches and scored two goals in a home clash against Sunderland, while Belgian speedster Jeremy Doku recovered from a calf injury in the Community Shield loss to Arsenal in August.

Enzo Maresca continues to roll the dice

Pep Guardiola's managerial successor at the Etihad Stadium, Enzo Maresca now has another chance to assess his attacking options as his Manchester City side maraud through the Premier League campaign.

City’s upcoming trip to Liverpool is just about as much of a test as could be set, with Andoni Iraola’s side looking to end the Manchester club's hot streak in the first match back since the Blues’ guilty Premier League verdict.

Much discourse has been clear at the dawn of Manchester City’s new post-Guardiola era about the identities of a new midfield following the replacement of Rodri with £320 million-plus trio Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez and Ayyoub Bouaddi.

But with the return of club football imminent, there are question marks surrounding how Enzo Maresca will set out his offence at Anfield.

Phil Foden remains suspended following his kick out on Bruno Fernandes in the Manchester derby, while Antoine Semenyo and Nico O’Reilly remain doubtful to appear through respective injuries. Erling Haaland is not expected to miss out against Liverpool.
