Liverpool have been linked with a bid of more than £37million for Tijuana midfielder Gilberto Mora. Mexican outlet Record has since put those claims to the 17-year-old’s agent.
On Monday, TUDN journalist David Faitelson said he had been told in Tijuana that Mora’s representative had passed on an offer from Liverpool. He said the figure was above $50 million.
ESPN’s Leon Lecanda said it was very likely that a historic agreement with a major European club would be announced on 14 October. That is the day Mora turns 18.
FIFA regulations only permit an international transfer after his 18th birthday. Borussia Dortmund and Benfica have held preliminary talks with his agent, Rafaela Pimenta, while Real Madrid and Barcelona are also monitoring him.
Record asked Pimenta about the reported offer and about talk of an announcement on 14 October. She declined to comment.
“Please understand that I don’t comment on transfer rumours,” Pimenta said. “I won’t say anything at all about the transfer of any player. Thank you very much for your understanding.”
Pimenta is a Brazilian lawyer who worked with the late Mino Raiola. She took over his Monaco-based agency after his death on 30 April 2022. Her clients include Erling Haaland.
In February, Pimenta said she would do everything possible to sell Mora at a high price. She argued that Mexican players are undervalued compared with Brazilians.
Mora’s Tijuana contract runs until 30 June 2029. He started three of Mexico’s games at the World Cup. He was also the youngest player at the tournament.
In September, he scored his first senior goal for Mexico in a 1-1 draw with Colombia.
At 17 years, 11 months and 12 days, he became the youngest scorer in the national team’s history. He has scored five goals in seven appearances for Tijuana this season.
