Alisson Becker is the best goalkeeper to have graced the Premier League in the last decade, and Liverpool cannot afford to let him leave at the end of the season.

Last season, the Brazilian struggled with injury and was unable to finish the season on the pitch, agreeing with the club and his national team that it was in everyone’s best interests for him to rest to be able to compete at the World Cup and start the 2026/27 season in top shape.

That’s exactly what has happened. Ali was fantastic at the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada. He has also started the new season in fine form, and a new stat perfectly encapsulates why he is so important to Liverpool and why the Reds cannot even for a second consider letting him leave when his current contract expires on 30 June 2027.

Gradient Sports on X shared a stat on Tuesday that blew my mind.

61.5% of Alisson’s saves in the Premier League this season have resulted in no rebound, highlighting how effective he is in eliminating danger. This has been a recurring trend in the Brazilian’s career. He doesn’t just save certain goals, but he also eliminates the potential for further danger.

It's the best rate among GKs this season, with the positional average being 34.92%.#LFC pic.twitter.com/3dzyspmJoP

Liverpool need to make sure Alisson and van Dijk are at Anfield in 2027 and beyond

Liverpool are in a critical phase of the post-Jurgen Klopp era. Arne Slot might have won the Premier League title in his first season, but he was sacked a year later, making way for Andoni Iraola.

Iraola seems the perfect fit for the Reds, but there are many hurdles to clear before he gets his own hands on a league title.

Keeping van Dijk and Alisson for more than just his first season will go a long way in ensuring the Spaniard has the best chance possible to leave his mark on the club.

Both players are still world-class and showing little sign of regressing.

Goalkeepers and centre-backs arguably continue to get better with age, and I firmly believe that Alisson and van Dijk are entering new eras within their respective careers where they rely more on their intelligence and experience than their physical attributes.

Alisson did want to leave in the summer, so it might not be possible to keep him even if the club are inclined to renew his deal, but van Dijk absolutely cannot be allowed to leave.
