Mikel Arteta has signed a new long-term contract to extend his stay at Arsenal.

The 44-year-old's existing contract with the Premier League champions, signed in September 2024, was due to expire next summer.

But the Spaniard, who was appointed in 2019, has committed his future to the club until June 2030.

Arteta has transformed Arsenal's fortunes during his tenure and guided the club to their first Premier League title in 22 years last season following three straight second-place finishes.

He also led the Gunners to only their second Champions League final, which they lost on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain. He has also won an FA Cup and three Community Shields.

"It's a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal," Arteta said in a statement.

"This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue.

"We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together.

Sky Sports' Nick Wright discusses Mikel Arteta's transformation of Arsenal since he took over at the club in December 2019, turning them into Premier League champions for the first time in over 20 years.

"I'm extremely grateful to Stan and Josh for their trust and support, and feel honoured to be leading this club through such a special period in its 140-year history.

"This is such a proud moment for me and my family. I feel the love and respect from our fantastic supporters, and they have mine - and ours - in return."

Meanwhile, Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick said: "This is an important time in Arsenal Football Club's history. We want to create a winning era together with Mikel.

Sky Sports' Sam Blitz discusses Mikel Arteta's five-stage plan for Arsenal and where the Spaniard currently is on the ladder and how he creates a 'dynasty' with the Gunners.

"We will continue to work hard together as we aim to fulfil our long-term ambitions for the club and our supporters.

"Mikel has the belief, determination and the understanding of what it takes to build something remarkable and enduring here, and we are excited to continue that journey together."

Analysis: Can Arteta eclipse Wenger?

Sky Sports' Gary Cotterill and Sam Blitz analyse Mikel Arteta's successes at Arsenal and if he carries on, whether the Spaniard could eclipse Arsene Wenger's legacy with the Gunners.

Sky Sports News reporter Gary Cotterill:

"Arsene Wenger certainly got off to a faster start, didn't he? But Arteta has got the time to do it.

"Arteta now, he's on his fourth contract and he's 44 years old. Arsene Wenger was 47 when he arrived at Arsenal. So he's already got a lot of years on him.

"In three years, Arteta will have been at Arsenal for 10 years, but still be the same age that Wenger was when he was appointed at Arsenal.

"I think that will be one of his ambitions, because people still think about Wenger as being the best manager, certainly modern manager, that Arsenal have ever had.

"And Arteta is certainly in the running, given his age and the fact that they seem to be having this contract situation, which doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon, to get the trophies that Wenger got."

Cotterill was speaking on a special Arsenal podcast about Arsenal's new contract with Ron Walker, Nick Wright and Sam Blitz.
