The New England Patriots entered Sunday’s matchup against the Buffalo Bills desperately needing someone to provide a spark. They probably didn’t expect Efton Chism III to become that player.

Chism made one of the biggest plays of New England’s young season, hauling in a spectacular one-handed, 23-yard touchdown from Drake Maye with 1:50 remaining in the Patriots’ 29-26 victory over Buffalo.

It was a memorable moment for Chism.

It also might have been the beginning of something much bigger.

Mack Hollins exited Sunday’s game with a calf injury and did not return. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said Monday he didn’t yet have a definitive update on Hollins’ status. With A.J. Brown already on injured reserve, New England suddenly could be without two of its most important receivers when the Las Vegas Raiders visit Gillette Stadium on Sunday.

That creates an obvious opportunity for Chism.

Chism Earned More Than A Highlight

Chism didn’t simply make one spectacular catch against Buffalo. He played a season-high 34 offensive snaps after Hollins went down and finished with two receptions for 42 yards.

More importantly, Chism delivered when New England’s season felt like it was hanging in the balance.

The Patriots trailed 26-21 when Maye escaped pressure and gave Chism an opportunity downfield. Chism made the most of it, pulling the ball down with one hand for the go-ahead touchdown.

“I saw it in the air, and Drake gave me an opportunity, and you got to come down with those opportunities,” Chism told reporters after the victory.

Vrabel repeatedly has emphasized players earning their roles.

Chism may have done exactly that.

Patriots Have Interesting Decision Ahead

New England’s receiver situation could force the issue. Romeo Doubs has emerged as a significant weapon and caught two touchdown passes against Buffalo. DeMario Douglas and Kyle Williams provide additional options.

But Chism now has something none of them can replicate. He delivered one of New England’s defining plays of the season.

The Patriots reportedly are exploring their options at receiver as they deal with injuries, so an outside addition remains possible. Chism shouldn’t be viewed merely as an emergency solution, though.

Sunday gave New England a glimpse of what could happen if the 24-year-old receives a larger opportunity.

One catch doesn’t create a breakout season.

Sometimes, however, one catch creates the opportunity for one.
