Mikel Arteta lands huge pay rise as Arsenal contract extension is confirmed

The Spaniard, who has been in charge since December 2019, had only been tied down until the end of the 2026/27 season.

talkSPORT revealed in May how talks to extend the 44-year-old's stay were set to take place in the summer after Arteta guided the club to a first Premier League title in 22 years.

And we then told you last month how terms on a new deal had been thrashed out, with an announcement expected during the international break.

That has now been confirmed by the Gunners, who are looking to scoop back-to-back Premier League titles for the first time in their history this season.

What has Mikel Arteta said about extending his stay?

Expressing his delight, Arteta told Arsenal's media team: "It's a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal.

"This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue.

“We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together.

“I'm extremely grateful to Stan and Josh for their trust and support, and feel honoured to be leading this club through such a special period in its 140-year history.

“This is such a proud moment for me and my family. I feel the love and respect from our fantastic supporters, and they have mine – and ours – in return.”

How much is Arteta's new contract worth?

Following Pep Guardiola's exit at Manchester City, Arteta was already the highest-paid manager in the division - earning around £10million-a-year.

And that is now believed to have been increased to £15m-a-year - a reward for ending 22 years of hurt.

Arteta's extension will take him to over ten years at the Emirates, bringing his association with the club to nearly 20 years.

He first joined as a player from Everton in 2011, before succeeding Thomas Vermaelen as captain in 2014, and then retiring at the club two years later.

What has been said about Arteta's new deal?

Bukayo Saka has already let slip that Arteta had agreed a new deal when speaking to talkSPORT’s England correspondent Faye Carruthers ahead of the Three Lions' Nations League defeat to Spain.

Lauding Arteta, the Hale End graduate said: “Yeah, a special manager and very important to the club.

“Hence why they gave him a new deal, because he deserves it.

“And yeah, he’s really transformed the club and got everyone dreaming again.

Arsenal's club-record signing Declan Rice could soon follow Arteta's suit, with talkSPORT understanding that the midfielder is in talks to extend his stay until 2031.

He would become the latest Arsenal star to commit their future to the club.

Saka, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Myles Lewis-Skelly all penned new long-term contracts at Arsenal in the last year.
