Mikel Arteta has signed a new four-year contract to continue as manager of Arsenal, the club have confirmed.

Arteta’s current contract was due to expire at the end of this season and, while all parties were relaxed over the situation, there was a desire to reward the 44-year-old with a new deal after he led Arsenal to their first Premier League title in more than 20 years last season.

Having taken charge in 2019, Arteta has helped progress Arsenal to one of the strongest teams in Europe, leading to the club reportedly making him the highest-paid manager in the Premier League.

“It's a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal,” Arteta told the club’s website. “This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue.

“We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together. I'm extremely grateful to Stan and Josh for their trust and support, and feel honoured to be leading this club through such a special period in its 140-year history.

“This is such a proud moment for me and my family. I feel the love and respect from our fantastic supporters, and they have mine – and ours – in return.”

Arteta commits future to Arsenal as club look to build dynasty

Arteta is the longest-serving manager in the top four divisions of English football, with December set to mark his seventh year at the club, which has culminated in five trophies and a Champions League runners up medal last season.

Arsenal are also understood to be in the process of renewing the contracts of Arteta’s backroom staff in the hopes that the stability can lead to a second successive league title this season.

There had been some concerns that Arteta would be targeted by other clubs such as Real Madrid or Barcelona but the Spaniard has always been committed to the Gunners, with his future now formally confirmed.

CEO Richard Garlick said: “This is an important time in Arsenal Football Club’s history. We want to create a winning era together with Mikel. We will continue to work hard together as we aim to fulfil our long-term ambitions for the club and our supporters.

“Mikel has the belief, determination and the understanding of what it takes to build something remarkable and enduring here, and we are excited to continue that journey together.”
