Arsenal expect Mikel Arteta’s new contract to hand them a “competitive advantage” over their rivals – as the Premier League champions laid out their plan to “dominate” the game and “create a winning era”.
Arteta’s tenure as Arsenal manager is set to extend into an 11th year after he signed terms on a new deal which will keep him in north London until the summer of 2030.
The extension of Arteta’s current contract, which had been up for renewal at the end of the season, was seen as something of a formality.
But the Spaniard has now officially been rewarded by Arsenal for overseeing a dramatic transformation, which last season culminated in the club winning their first title in 22 years.

“We want to create a winning era together with Mikel,” said Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick. “We can’t stand still. We can’t sit there and pat ourselves on the back and say, ‘Job done’.
“The fact that Mikel has made a long-term commitment to the club, and the fact that the club is making a long-term commitment to him, just strengthens our partnership. And I will be honest and say it gives us a competitive advantage over the other teams.
“I look at the other sides in the Premier League and Mikel is now the only current manager that has won the Premier League.
“You look at the traditional top-six teams and they have all gone through managerial changes in the past 12 months, whereas we now have a manager who has been with us for a significant period of time.
“He has been allowed to build and develop a team and that is the excitement now. This is the beginning and not the end of our journey.

“This is where we want to go on and show the confidence that that (league title) win is going to bring to us. We want to dominate football for the next number of years and we are in a really strong position to do that.”
Arteta’s new contract is set to make him the third longest-serving Arsenal manager in the club’s history – behind only Arsene Wenger and George Allison. His backroom staff have also renewed terms which fall in line with the Spaniard’s extension.
“It’s a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal,” said Arteta, who succeeded Unai Emery in 2019.
“This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue.
“We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together.

“I feel honoured to be leading this club through such a special period in its 140-year history.
“This is such a proud moment for me and my family. I feel the love and respect from our fantastic supporters and they have mine – and ours – in return.”
Arteta’s side had started their Premier League defence with a perfect record until a shock 3-0 defeat at Brighton prior to the international break.
They return to action with a home match against Leeds at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The Gunners are three points behind Manchester City.
