Yankuba Minteh remains keen on a move to Liverpool after the Reds failed to sign him in the summer, with Brighton’s £80m asking price proving to be a major stumbling block. Liverpool could revisit their interest in the winger, but his recovery from injury and Brighton’s valuation could play a key role in deciding his future.

Yankuba Minteh is still interested in a move to Liverpool despite missing out on the summer transfer window. as per latest transfer news. The Brighton and Hove Albion winger was once a Liverpool target as they were looking to increase their attacking depth. However, the two clubs failed to reach an agreement after Brighton asked the Reds £80m for him. GIVEMESPORT reports that Minteh still wants to join Liverpool, giving the Reds another chance to sign him in the upcoming transfer window.
Yankuba Minteh Still Wants Liverpool Move
Yankuba Minteh remains keen on joining Liverpool even after the failed summer transfer. Gambian football expert Baboucarr Fallaboweh told Sports Witness that Anfield remains an attractive destination for the player. Minteh’s reported preference could become important if Liverpool decide to return for him.
The Reds had made two offers for him, with Sky Sports reporting that offers of £50m and £60m were rejected by Brighton. The Seagulls were looking for a higher fee. Their initial valuation was reportedly £70m before increasing to £80m during the final part of the transfer window. As per Transfermarkt, his transfer value currently is £45m so paying £80m for him would be too much. Liverpool might have questioned carefully if he was worth that much money and might have backed out because of Brighton’s high ask.
Why Liverpool Wanted Yankuba Minteh
Liverpool’s interest in the winger was understandable. The Gambian primarily plays on the right wing and is really good at creating chances. He led Brighton for chances created last season. Minteh also has immense experience in the Premier League. The winger joined Brighton from Newcastle in 2024 after an impressive loan spell at Feyenoord. He is also only 22 years old and has enough time to develop his game further.

The Red’s interest in the player was also connected to the need for greater depth in wide areas. After Mohamed Salah’s departure, the Reds do not have enough depth on the right wing. Minteh’s natural position there made him an attractive option.
£80m Price Tag Remains Major Problem
The main problem with this transfer story is the transfer fees Brighton is demanding. Minteh is a player whose market value is estimated to be £45m and asking £80m for him is too much. The Reds know that he may not be worth that price tag and therefore did not go above £60m for him. Minteh’s contract runs till 2029, and Brighton are therefore under little pressure to sell him.
There is also a major fitness question surrounding Yankuba Minteh. The winger suffered a serious injury pre-season and required surgery. He is supposed to return to the field during October or November. The Reds might still want to see if he is back in his previous form before making another offer. If Minteh comes back strongly and performs well, Brighton’s £80m valuation can look reasonable. However, if he does not perform then the Reds will get even more bargaining power.
Author’s opinion
A return for Liverpool in the January transfer window cannot be ruled out fully. Liverpool might come with another offer for the winger. However, he will only move to the Reds if Brighton agrees. I do not think Brighton would let go of one of their top players for a relatively low fee. Brighton would definitely ask for a high price for him and Liverpool would have to carefully consider whether he is worth the price. I also do not think the Reds should rush into the deal before properly getting to see how well he can perform after his recent injury.
