Ben Roethlisberger Explains Why T.J. Watt Had 'Every Right' to Erupt on Sideline 1

T.J. Watt‘s heated sideline moment drew national attention as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense struggled. The star edge rusher grabbed a headset and spoke directly to the coaching staff.

Ben Roethlisberger later shared his view of the incident. The former Steelers quarterback supported Watt’s reaction and said the edge rusher has every right to speak up.

The Steelers fell to 2-2 after a loss in Cleveland, and the Browns led 21-10 at halftime. Television cameras caught Watt grabbing a sideline headset to speak directly with the defensive coordinator. The coordinator addressed the moment days later.

“When you get a guy that wants to start yelling and screaming at the team, whether he’s trying to pick people up, or he wants to yell at coach or whatever, when it doesn’t happen that often, when T.J. Watt grabs that thing, it’s probably like, ‘Okay, something’s going on,'” Roethlisberger said on his Footbahlin podcast. “I think the fact that he gets on there, he’s got every right to do it. He’s a leader. He’s a captain. I assume he’s a captain. I think he’s a Hall of Fame guy. He’s making plays. He is a bright spot for this team. He has every right to do it.”

The former quarterback’s backing underscored how deeply Watt’s leadership is respected within the organization. Rather than seeing the heated exchange as internal discord, Roethlisberger highlighted that when a star player of Watt’s caliber speaks up, it serves as a necessary wake-up call for the entire sideline.

Watt has earned that credibility through his dominant play, making his rare sideline reaction stand out from routine emotional outbursts. That track record is precisely why the former quarterback views the moment as a meaningful signal rather than ordinary noise.

“Because he doesn’t do it often, it’s going to create headway. You see other guys, other captains on the team,” Roethlisberger added. “They maybe not on the headset, but screaming at guys and yelling.” The defensive coordinator addressed the moment himself days later, calling it “just normal football conversation” and saying he wasn’t going to get into details.

The coordinator added that he encourages his players to display their full emotions, viewing the exchange as a passionate response to on-field adversity rather than internal discord. As Pittsburgh prepares to face Indianapolis, the focus shifts to stopping Jonathan Taylor and the Colts’ offense.
