The £60m transfer battle which could pit Liverpool against Man Utd - and who will win

Reports suggest that Liverpool and Manchester United are primed for a major Premier League transfer battle - so how might it pan out?

The January transfer window may be the better part of three months away, but Manchester United’s recruitment team are already busy. Their failure to land a new left-back over the summer has created a headache for manager Michael Carrick, and it looks increasingly likely that they’ll try to find some competition for Luke Shaw over the winter.

A long list of potential targets has already emerged from a wide range of sources. Alejandro Balde, David Raum and Tyrick Mitchell are among the players under consideration but now another name seems to have been added to the shortlist: Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert.

The Frenchman’s performances at the Vitality Stadium have been sufficient to put himself on United’s radar, according to new reports, but a deal could be expensive – and could put them in direct competition with old rivals Liverpool.

TEAMtalk claim that sources have told them Truffert has emerged as a serious candidate for Manchester United as they continue their search for a left-back, but the 24-year-old’s performances have attracted attention from other sides as well.

Liverpool are also said to be keen on the Belgium-born France international, who has impressed since making the move to the south coast in 2025, and are supposedly set to provide “serious competition” for United.

Truffert was signed to replace Miloš Kerkez after his move to Anfield but a combination of the inconsistency of the Hungarian and the likely departure of Kostas Tsimikas, whose contract is coming to an end, means that Andoni Iraola’s side also find themselves looking at left-back options.

Manchester United, for their part, are said to have a shortlist of four players as it stands, with Truffert the only one named in the report. That means that a bid is far from guaranteed, but they are likely to have money to spend in January if they believe the need for a new left-back is sufficiently urgent.

Liverpool’s timeline for a potential deal isn’t discussed in the report, but with Tsimikas still on the books, their need is less pressing and it’s likely that they wouldn’t be looking to spend the kind of money required to buy a player of Truffert’s stature until next summer. That might give United a window of opportunity to get in ahead of any potential competition.

The story hints that there is interested from other sides – a few teams, including Bayern Munich, are mentioned as having been admirers of Truffert prior to his move to Bournemouth, for instance, although their inclusion in the report seems to be strictly speculative and based solely on historical links. If teams other than Liverpool and Manchester United are keen right now, their sources clearly don’t know for certain. Either way, getting a deal over the line in the near future may prove to be challenging.

Could Bournemouth sell Truffert in January?

Truffert, who made his first appearance for France in four years during the recent international break under new head coach Zinedine Zidane, is under contract until 2030, giving Bournemouth the ability to leverage a significant transfer fee from his suitors – and TEAMtalk’s report suggests that an asking price of around £60m has been set.

That price tag appears to be speculative, and it’s also unlikely that Bournemouth would be prepared to sell mid-season. The Cherries have shown a renewed determination to keep their best players at the club for longer since the exodus of talent they endured in 2025 – as demonstrated by their rejection of Chelsea’s bid for Alex Scott over the summer – they are only likely to consider a sale in the winter if the fee is excessive.

There is some chance that Scott leaves given that he has rejected a new contract with the club and is inside the last two years of his deal, but with Truffert tied down for longer there is little reason that Bournemouth should have their arm twisted easily. That ties in with Liverpool’s likely timeline, but not with Manchester United’s. It’s at least possible that they’re prepared to stump up enough to change Bournemouth’s mind over the winter, but the Cherries won’t be bullied easily.

Getting a deal done over the winter will be extremely difficult, and a far more likely scenario is that United look for a stopgap solution before considering whether to get involved in a bidding war next summer. Even then, Truffert will command a hefty fee, and Bournemouth will be in no rush to sell. No matter who may be interested, it will take a committed act of will and a lot of money to get a deal over the line.
