Liverpool have been linked with a move for Mexico midfielder Gilberto Mora in recent days, and it now looks as though they have cranked up their interest.

The 17-year-old impressed at the 2026 World Cup, standing out as one of the best young midfielders, and Mexican legend Raphael Marquez has recently hailed his brilliance, saying:

“I think Gilberto is very talented and has a bright future ahead of him. He just needs the right guidance. I believe he could fit in with any team. He has the ability and above all the mindset to succeed. So wherever he goes, I’m sure he’ll have plenty of opportunities and a great career.”

Mora has been mentioned as an option for Liverpool of late, although it has been claimed that he “would prefer to move to Spain”, at a time when he is “on the radar of all of Europe’s leading clubs.”

Speaking on TUDN [via Sport Witness], local journalist David Faitelson has said that the Reds have made an offer for the teenager ahead of his 18th birthday:

“I’ve been told in Tijuana that they received, through Gilberto Mora’s representative, Rafaela Pimenta, an offer from an English club, in this case Liverpool. It would be a historic figure, above $50m, for Xolos de Tijuana for Gilberto Mora, who turns 18 next week.”

Faitelson also discussed Mora being left out of Marquez’s recent Mexico squad for a game during the international break, suggesting it is to do with his future:

“Do you think Rafael Márquez was going to risk him in the middle of negotiations, in a match that is physically demanding? Of course not. For me, Mora not playing on Saturday is an indication that the operation is moving forward and progressing.”

Gilberto Mora would be a huge signing for Liverpool

Admittedly, Mora is still an extremely young player who hasn’t yet tested himself in Europe, but the amount of interest in him from the world’s biggest clubs shows what a talent he is.

He looked so at home on the big stage for Mexico at the World Cup, possessing so much poise in the middle of the park and completing 90.7% of his passes.

If Liverpool managed to sign Mora over rivals and other European giants, it would feel like a major coup, with manager Andre Jardine one of his many admirers:

“I’ve dedicated my life to working with young talent in youth systems, and it’s rare to see a player like him. Mexico has a gem here, it’s not normal to see a player like that, he is an exceptional player. He possesses great character, is taking full advantage of his national team experience, and he’s undoubtedly special. I believe he embodies a bright future for Mexican soccer.”

It will be interesting to see how the situation develops, with a move to Spain still arguably feeling most likely for Mora, but it is encouraging to hear this latest claim regarding Liverpool, as they look to add to their midfield in the coming transfer windows.
