When Jurgen Klopp stepped onto the international stage as Germany head coach, few expected a quiet transition.

His opening campaign in charge delivered a mixture of heavy pressing, drone-assisted tactical tweaks, squad casting calls, and an injury list that would feel eerily familiar to Liverpool supporters. Taking charge of a 44-man pool (XXL casting) for Nations League fixtures against the Netherlands, Greece, and Serbia, Klopp’s initial record reads as a mixed bag on paper: one win, two draws, and a defeat.

But behind the scenes at Germany’s Herzogenaurach base camp, Klopp was working on chemistry and assessing strengths and weaknesses amongst the players. In a modern twist on his coaching methods, Klopp deployed drones during secret training sessions to capture a bird's-eye view, allowing his analytical team to fine-tune their tactics.

Yet, off the pitch, Klopp’s emphasis remained firmly on unity. To prevent players from isolating in their rooms, the camp was filled with group games such as Uno and rounds of Cornhole.

Senior stars were tasked with presenting medals and speeches to debutants, while Klopp personally welcomed every player. Klopp’s tactical plans for his opening fixture against the Dutch were impacted when Jamal Musiala suffered a thigh injury before kick-off, followed by Kai Havertz limping off inside 30 minutes.

Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck later left the camp through injury as well. Despite a frustrating 1–0 home defeat to Greece in Augsburg, Klopp’s man-management was reflected in their next game against Serbia.

He held extensive one-on-one sessions with Florian Wirtz to rebuild his confidence, while handing Serge Gnabry the captain’s armband for a crucial 2–0 victory over Serbia in Munich.

Klopp’s willingness to test the boundaries extended to squad selection, rotating big names like captain Joshua Kimmich out of the second match window to see how the group coped without its established leaders.

With his initial "XXL casting" experiment now over, Klopp has a true understanding of what his squad could shape into, prepping for the return fixtures against Serbia and the Netherlands in November.

While the initial results may not look like what people expect, the culture and harmony Klopp appears to be building in the German national team could help reshape it into a high-level, competitive international squad once again.
