NFL Insider: Minnesota Vikings’ Odell Beckham Jr. Signing Sends ‘Final Warning’ to Fellow…

Odell Beckham Jr.

The Minnesota Vikings haven’t been afraid to take chances and make changes under first-year general manager Nolan Teasley, who has surprisingly chased after some big-name aging veterans that the NFL has seemingly forgotten about. First, he gave Jamal Adams another shot, and the Pro Bowler seemed to be fitting in really well before a season-ending injury. Now, it’s Odell Beckham Jr.’s turn for a second chance.

On Wednesday, the Vikings added the 33-year-old receiver to their practice squad as Justin Jefferson continues fighting his way back from a recent ankle injury that kept him out of action in Week 4’s win over the Dolphins. Both LSU alums, Jefferson and Beckham, have a special bond; now they’ll officially get a chance to work together, and who knows, maybe Randy Moss will even watch some film with the two receiver icons.

But what does Beckham’s addition mean for Minnesota? What type of role, if any, could he be looking at?

On Wednesday’s edition of “PFT Live,” NFL insider Mike Florio suggested that Beckham, internally, may be viewed as a potential replacement for the Vikings’ WR3, Jauan Jennings.

“The question becomes, what’s the plan here? What will Odell Beckham Jr.’s role with the Vikings be? I think that the fairest way to interpret this, at a minimum, it’s a wakeup call to Jauan Jennings. Because Jennings hasn’t done much for the Vikings. If the Vikings don’t get more from Jennings soon, Beckham could become the next Jennings. This feels to me like to me a vote of no confidence in Jennings. A final warning to Jennings, that it’s time for him to make contributions, that it’s time to develop chemistry with Kyler Murray.”

Jennings signed a one-year, $8 million contract with Minnesota this offseason. In 2024, the former San Francisco 49ers wideout recorded 975 yards. This year, Jennings has been targeted just four times, catching two of them for nine yards. He’s on pace for a new career-low in production across the board.

While Jennings also adds a lot as a run blocker, the Vikings may be at the point where they’re looking for more pass-catching production out of their third receiver, and Beckham, a three-time Pro Bowler, may be able to offer just that. Plus, OBJ and coach Kevin O’Connell already have a great working relationship from winning a Super Bowl together with the Los Angeles Rams. It may not mean anything, but their connection could help Beckham get up to speed in Minnesota a bit quicker than he would elsewhere.
