Liverpool may have sold centre-back Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen last year, but a shock return to Anfield doesn’t appear to be out of the question.

The 23-year-old continues to grow as a player, starting for England in their 3-0 win at home to the Czech Republic on Tuesday night, taking his tally of caps to nine in the process.

Liverpool opted to move Quansah on in 2025, cashing in and allowing him to join Leverkusen, where he has proven to be a solid signing to date, making 50 appearances and scoring five goals for good measure.

According to Football Insider, the Reds are continuing to “keep tabs” on the English defender, as they weigh up whether to bring him back to Anfield in 2027.

There is a clause in his Leverkusen contract that allows Liverpool to re-sign him for £59.5m, but that aspect of the deal runs out on June 15th next summer.

The report goes on to add that Quansah “is not part of the Reds’ plans at the moment, although they will continue to track him in the coming months”, also saying they are “weighing up their options defensively ahead of the upcoming transfer windows.”

Should Liverpool re-sign Jarell Quansah in 2027?

There was plenty of sense in Liverpool selling Quansah when they did, cashing in on a player who wasn’t definitely going to make the grade at Anfield in the long term, especially with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate ahead of him in the centre-back pecking order.

As mentioned, though, he has developed as a footballer since then, becoming a firm part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans and appearing three times at the 2026 World Cup earlier this year, performing well despite being sent-off against Mexico.

Bringing him back to Liverpool would, therefore, have its merits, and Arne Slot spoke glowingly about him during their time working together with the Reds:

“I think he developed really well throughout the whole season and the next step is for him to not be involved in a moment like this in the last minutes, which had no impact on the result. It would’ve been nice for him if it wouldn’t have happened because then probably everyone would’ve been much more positive about his performance.

“Jarell is fast, strong and comfortable on the ball. He has every ingredient a centre-back for this club should have. Now the last parts should be consistency in his performances.”

That said, spending £59.5m on a defender who wouldn’t necessarily start every week would be a risk, with Virgil van Dijk hopefully signing a contract extension, and Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni both hugely promising talents.

For that reason, Liverpool would be wise to steer away from sealing a reunion with Quansah for the time being – if he were cheaper, it would make more sense.

There are plenty of other options out there for Andoni Iraola and the recruitment team to look at – if they end up feeling that Quansah is the best possible option at the end of this season, they need to be trusted.
