Former Liverpool forward Fabio Borini has announced his retirement after a 17-year playing career.
The 35-year-old spent three years at Anfield, having signed for the Reds in 2012 from Roma, and scored three goals in a total of 38 appearances across two seasons. Borini’s time with Liverpool was separated by a year on loan at Sunderland, with the Italian going on to secure a permanent move to the Black Cats in 2015.
Borini also played for the likes of Chelsea, Swansea, and AC Milan before ending his career at English League Two side Salford City. He won his sole cap for Italy in 2012, having represented his country across various youth levels.
Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, Borini posted a number of pictures from across his playing career, including one of him celebrating after scoring for Liverpool.
“It all started with a flight. Thank you @chelseafc,” Borini posted.
“I was 16 years old. A flight I spent entirely with tears in my eyes, beginning the journey of my career with no real destination, other than the dreams I wanted to achieve.

“From that day on, I started building myself, without knowing what would become of that kid with such a strong mindset. I started building my dreams in my head, and somehow, I ended up turning them into my reality.”
Borini went on to add: “I want to thank that kid who never stopped believing. And the man I am today will keep believing in the next opportunity, this time without a ball at my feet, but with that same belief. Always. THANK YOU. THANK YOU, FOOTBALL.”
Among those showing their support for Borini was former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who played alongside the Italian at Anfield.

The England international liked the post and replied with clapping and raised hands emojis. Liverpool also sent a message on its official website, saying: “We wish Fabio all the best for the future.”
Borini’s retirement comes just a few months after it was confirmed that he had been released by Salford, with the former forward having not found a new club following his departure.
Borini made 33 appearances across all competitions for the League Two side, scoring five goals in the process after arriving as a free agent last October.
He initially signed a short-term deal before being rewarded with a contract until the end of the 2025/26 season. Borini represented Italy at various youth levels and gained one senior cap for his country.
