In the debate-happy industry that is sports media, it’s not often that you find widespread agreement. But those who cover the NFL seem to be circling around a near-unifying take: The San Francisco 49ers are the best of the best.

Despite battling myriad injuries to important positions, the Niners are one of three undefeated teams in the league, and media members have circled the team as the league’s top dog. ESPN, CBS Sports, Fox Sports, the Athletic and NFL.com have San Francisco atop their power rankings heading into Week 5, just days before what will be the team’s biggest test of the season in Seattle.

The Athletic even has a 2026 postseason simulator that, as of midday Wednesday, gives the Niners the highest chances of making the postseason, earning the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye, and even winning the Super Bowl. The simulator has those odds at 14% through four games.

Close behind the Niners on all of those rankings, and in the simulator’s odds, are the Kansas City Chiefs, who in recent weeks have looked like the they’ve regained the powers necessary to return to their “Evil Empire” levels of 2019-2024. One would think the Minnesota Vikings, the third and final remaining undefeated squad, would slot in neatly behind the lossless triumvirate in rankings, but that hasn’t been the case, given the disappointing state of their offense. Conveniently enough, the 49ers will get a chance to face off against their fellow unbeaten competitors later this year. The Niners will “host” the Vikings in Mexico City during Week 11 and, about a month later, travel to Kansas City to face the Chiefs in Week 16.

There is one power rankings that stand out from the rest: the Ringer. Writer Diante Lee not only has the Niners below the Chiefs but also has them below two other teams (the Seahawks and Jaguars) with defeats on their record. To Lee’s credit, he does offer high praise of the Niners’ stellar offense under Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan, and his criticism of the team is rather fair, as it focuses on the other side of the ball, which has suffered the brunt of the team’s laundry list of injuries.

“I expect San Francisco’s offense to keep rolling over the next month, but how the defense performs will determine whether this is still a top-five team at the midseason mark,” Lee wrote. “Seattle, Atlanta, and Las Vegas have all been excellent to start the year, and playing them will reveal whether this defense has severe flaws that might keep it from contending.”
