Biggest indication yet that Liverpool’s transfer strategy has completely changed

**Liverpool’s reported £37.5m bid for Mexican teenage talent Gilberto Mora proves that the Reds’ transfer strategy has well and truly changed.**

Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool were raised to the upper echelons of European football, going from Europa League hopefuls to champions of Europe in two seasons.

They did this, famously, by scouring the market for bargains with the help of one of the best data teams in world football, signing the likes of Andy Robertson (£8m) and Mohamed Salah (£37m).

Liverpool went from a sleeping giant to fulfilling their potential as one of the biggest football clubs on the planet.

Since then, things have changed. Markedly.

When Liverpool paid £75m for Virgil van Dijk in 2018, it was billed as an exception to the rule to sign a truly world class player before their rivals.

However, in the last few years. Liverpool’s transfer strategy has completely transformed.

The first sign was the £68m paid to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica and although that transfer failed, it was a sign of things to come.

Last summer, Liverpool spent £460m, spending £125m on Alexander Isak, £116m on Florian Wirtz and £79m on Hugo Ekitike.

There was a belief that the buck would stop there, but Liverpool spent another £123m to bring Bradley Barcola to the club this summer, and now we have an even bigger indication that things have changed massively behind the scenes at boardroom level.

Rumours of a £37.5m bid for 17-year-old Gilberto Mora prove that Liverpool have changed tactics in the transfer game

According to journalist David Faitelson, who is followed by 3.9 million people on X, told [TUDN](https://www.tudn.com/futbol/liga-mx/faitelson-da-conocer-oferta-millonaria-gil-mora-futbol-ingles): _“I’m told in Tijuana that they received word from Gilberto Mora’s representative, a Brazilian woman named Rafaela Pimenta, that there’s an offer from an English club, in this case Liverpool, for a record-breaking sum exceeding $50 million for Xolos de Tijuana for Gilberto Mora, who turns 18 next week.”_

The $50m (£37.5m) bid is the biggest by some margin that Liverpool will have paid for a teenager.

Below are Liverpool’s highest bids for teenagers to date:

* Giovanni Leoni – 2025 (£26m + unspecified add-ons)

* Divock Origi – 2014 (£10m)

* Fabio Carvalho – 2022 (£5m + £2.75m add-ons)

* Calvin Ramsay – 2022 (£4m + £2.5m add-ons)

* Joe Gomez 2015 (£3.5m)

Fabrizio Romano has also reported on Liverpool’s interest in Mora, telling his eponymous [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koLRDb-BTuk) channel that fans should keep a close eye on this deal, suggesting there is life in the story.

He said: _“Keep close eye to Gilberto Mora, the youngest goalscorer ever for Mexican national team._

_“This boy is special. This midfielder is special. 17 years old, born in October 2008 and Gilberto Mora is considered in the industry as one of the best talents around in midfield._

_“So we are talking about a player who has a lot of quality, who has a lot of potential, Clubs from Spain, from England and not only, are monitoring him._

_“So there is a lot of attention from European top clubs. I’m sure in the near future there will be conversations with his camp because these clubs have already started working around Gilberto Mora to understand the price, to understand the possibility to bring him to Europe in the near future._

_“So there is movement around Gilberto Mora who in Mexico is considered as the next big thing, and it’s going to be a very, very interesting situation to follow.”_
