Lamine Yamal has offered an interesting assessment of why FC Barcelona might struggle against teams like Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, and his comments should certainly catch the attention of FC Bayern supporters.
Speaking to Movistar (as captured by Fabrizio Romano), the Barcelona star admitted that his team’s weaknesses become more apparent when facing opponents capable of matching them physically and forcing them to defend for long stretches.
“Our weak point stands out more against teams like Bayern or PSG. They’re teams with more physical strength, and they force you to run a lot and stay focused throughout theentire match. In contrast, Arsenal is a more tactical match—one that focuses more on ball possession,” Yamalsaid. “I think PSG is one of the favorites, but their problem is that winning again after already having won is something very difficult. That’s the hardest thing in football. When you win a title, winning it again is the most complicated part.”
The Bayern Munich comment is particularly interesting because it highlights exactly what makes these matchups so difficult for FC Barcelona. FC Bayern can turn a possession battle into a physical contest, constantly asking opponents to defend, run, and maintain concentration. Simply put, Bayern Munich—and PSG as well—can be a nightmare opponent for anyone.
It also provides an interesting contrast with Arsenal, whom Yamal views as a more tactical, possession-oriented opponent.
And while Yamal considers PSG one of the favorites, he also believes defending a title can be even harder than winning it in the first place. For Bayern Munich, the message is clear: FC Barcelona knows exactly where it can be vulnerable when the intensity goes up.
Perhaps we will get to see some of these potential matchups play out.
